Joey, you are a helluva guy! I wish I were closer to you as well. Not just for the millions of rabbits in your area, either! You are a person I would be proud to know. Keep up the good work.

thanks for the confidence guys. I've got packing to do soon as I get home from work. I'm bringing extra vests that I have and anything else I can think of. I'm going to bring small game shears freezer bags plastic gloves so we can maybe clean the rabbits in the field if anyone wants to I'm going to help with that. Afterwards we're all suppose to go to a local dinner for a bite to eat. Hope everyone can join us for that too.

Batteries are charge memory card is ready to go. I'm rolling out very early tomorrow. I'm hunting another property sunday that is in that area with a father/son team. That should be fun too. they do not own dogs but have 60ac thicket for us to hunt.

I'm hoping for everyone to have a fun time and safe hunting for all us. I'll have something early next week.

Indiana Beagler's Alliance and the Dept. of Natural Resources,Division of State Parks and Reservoirs held its annual youth Rabbit hunt this past Saturday October 30,2010. The event began at 7 AM at the Salamonie Visitors Center, Lost Bridge West, where 31 young people, their mentors and dog handlers from at least 4 Beagle Clubs gathered and divided into groups to head out to the field. The sounds of Beagles barking and excited youth filled the air as Justin Harrington,Wildlife Specialist at Salamonie Reservoir opened the doors of the visitors center so some of the mentors and youth could purchase their hunting license. Once all the preliminaries, including points on safety given by Alliance board member, Don LeCount, was completed 11 teams of sportsmen spread out across the 8500 Acre Reservoir area in pursuit of Cottontail Rabbits.

Mean while Alliance President, Jack Hyden, was back at Bozarth's Camp Resort working with 2 Alliance helpers,Kathy Cronk and Debbie Charles preparing the Bozarth's meeting room for the onslaught of hungry sportsmen that in a few hours would be coming thru the doors. While I decorated the room in hunting and fishing decor, Kathy chronk began getting the kitchen around. soon the room was ready and with Debbie's arrival preparation of lunch became the focus. Lunch consisting of both Venison and regular Chili, Venison barbecue, Hot Dogs Macaroni and Potato salad, Dinner Rolls, chips, pickle slices,German Chocolate cake, pineapple upside down cake, brownies and cup cakes along with hot chocolate, coffee, bottled water, and sodas for drinks was barely finished as the first group of hunters arrived. It took only about 15 minutes for the quiet lunch room to be filled with the sounds of laughter and excited youth hunters talking about the hunt, the dogs, and the
Rabbits that came by so fast they didn't have time to shoot....lol. Everyone talked about the extremely dry conditions in the field that made the Beagles jobs harder, the weeds that prevented them from seeing the Rabbits easily, and the 5 Rabbits that were harvested. None of the youth seemed disappointed about not getting a Rabbit, and from all appearances the most stressful part of the whole hunt was waiting for the rest of the hunters to arrive at Bozarth's so lunch could begin..

Lunch was a big success for everyone, lots of compliments on the good food. after everyone settled in to their meal we began passing out numbers to the youth hunters. One by one we called each number as it was drawn from a bowl. Each youth took his/her turn picking a prize from the table. We also had 6 fifty pound bags of dog food for some of the dog handlers. lunch was done and everyone headed out the door about 2:30 pm, with the clean up crew not leaving until around 4:00PM

From the statistics that i have about 50% of the youth that participated had never been hunting before. several had never Rabbit hunted, but had participated in a youth Deer or Dove hunt and the remainder had Rabbit hunted before.

Indiana Beagler' Alliance thanks the follow people and groups for their help in making the 2010 Youth Rabbit Hunt at Salamonie such a successful event.

Joeyman, great thing to do. Safety first! I don't believe there is any reason for anyone to have a loaded gun until the hounds are headed their way in pursuit of a rabbit. This means when you get out of the truck you don't load your gun, If the rabbit is killed then everyone who has loaded their gun during the chase now needs to unload , until they again separate and another chase is headed their way. Under no circumstances should one hunter meet another with a loaded firearm, You will not be jump shooting rabbits so there will be no need for loaded guns when not on " stand". There are liable to be some single-shot shotguns on this hunt, watch for the cocked hammer. Take the time the morning of the hunt to go over the "rules" with everyone.Have a great hunt.

Joey, Great to see this happening get these kids outside and off the couch!! I take different kids out hunting with me all winter long, only 1 at a time though. I haven't got the courage to do 7 or 8 at a time yet. But one bit of advice for you just have fun the kids will no matter what happens. I always carry a bunch of those hand warmers packs in my coat for the kids that get cold hands and feet. Good luck keep us posted on how it turned out. Your welcome to come north and run some white bunnies this winter, give those hounds a change of scenary.
