Re: Snow
How cold is to cold for a single dog in an insulated dog house with straw? I start to worry around -10 and bring em in.

Re: Snow
It was -30 celcius (--22 F ) here this morning and will probably be that again or close to it tonite. My dogs do fine in insulated houses packed with straw.

Re: Snow
I used to worry about my dog on those sub zero nights so I purchased her a small heater called a houndheater. They are made by a guy in northern MN who knows what cold nights are like. She was probably ok before but after a long day out in the woods I sure sleep better knowing that she is in a warm house.I also think that It's easier to keep weight on her in the winter when she doesn't have to expend her own energy to warm up her house. The other morning it was - 15 deg outside and 58 deg in her house. They are really well built and well worth the hundred bucks that I paid for it.

Re: Snow
Ya my barely 13 and 14inch dogs do alright if they can stay on top but if its powder or a drift good luck just watching them run around in the yard is a riot when they get on top of a 4 foot drift and fall through the middle of it.
Re: Snow
Hey NorWester1, temps are -22 here this morning also. I have the truck warming up and coffee brewing, it has to get little cooler to keep me in
. Besides I'm determined to look for Sally's bottom and hoping I can't find it
.
Waalkens....can ya send me the info on that hound heater, I have a older dog that could sure use a little extra help keeping warm. Like Norwester I have good insulated dog houses with plenty of straw and door covers.

Re: Snow
Here you go. http://www.houndheater.com . When I bought mine I also got the indoor/outdoor thermometer so I could tell what was going on. I used to pack her house full of straw but now all I have in there is an old comforter off my bed and can wash it once in a while. She is in a really well built house with a door and the heater does'nt even seem to be running a good share of the time. At 150 watts it would cost about 10 bucks a month if it ran constantly so it is probably costing me around 4 bucks a month to have a warm, dry dog, and besides that she definately earns it... Good luck.

Re: Snow
well we are still covered in snow but dogs are finally out of heat and have been layed up for almost a month. Gun deer season comes in for just this weekend. So i figure ill take em out to try and run for a hour or so and let them stretch there legs. Aint even gonna take a gun aint expecting to jump one but if they do well give it heck. Or atleast try to.
Re: Snow
Still haven't found Sally's bottom yet but getting closer. Managed to get two hare up and moving but when the one came by me he never exactly had the look of fear in his eye's as he was stopping to groom himselfBudd wrote:Hey NorWester1, temps are -22 here this morning also. 14 deg, here this morn, ice in the river swamp, windy dry. Took the 8month old pups and Cain to the river swamp to see what would happen.Cain jumped one swamper,he and the pups did pretty good, off and on the ice nothing great but kept on trying.
Finally petered out. Couldn`t ask for much more out of young dogs.

Re: Snow
Last night was 6 deg F when I got home from work, tonight, it's 26 F with a sleet coming down and man is it slick ! The back roads are a glaze and the driveway I slid off of when I tried to back the truck in. Ain't nothin gonna hold in this ice, I just hope the power don't go off...I got an old sled to pull in some wood but don't know if I can hold a footing to get it in...
