CORN IN DOG FOOD- GOOD OR BAD ?

Post by wireman252 »

Just curious about opinions on how corn ,in dog foods , can affect our dogs. Was reading some info on-line and it stated that corn is very hard for a dog to digest , and can have some bad affects on some dogs , such as allergies of the skin. I'm considering switching to Diamond Naturals, no corn , wheat , or soy , mainly because I've noticed a difference in my dogs with the food I've fed for 5 years now. I think they must have changed something in the formula , or I simply got a bad batch.

Josh, that is the cut I was considering. If you don't mind me asking , how much are you paying for it there in Marshall ?

At a local green house and feed store I pay 24.89 for a 40 pound bag and I am feeding two hounds so it is affordable for me.

Josh, that's not a bad price by the bag compared to here. It's $26 a bag here but I'm negotiating ,as of this morning,a $22 a bag price if bought by the ton. Hopefully it works out , that's a pretty big savings.

I don't know if corn is good or bad but I do like the Diamond Naturals and I also had good luck with the Exceed 26/16 from Sam's Club.

Someone said it best on here before in a prior discussion, "How much corn do you digest and pass?" I think this probably holds true for dog feed.

Dogs can't digest corn it is a filler. I have fed a lot of different brands of dog food ( kibble ) through the years and it always seems after about 2 years it stops keeping the dogs fit and healthy looking. It doesn't matter which brand I have to change every so often. I don't know why this is because even if I switch to a cheaper brand the dogs start looking better.

Corn, is more than a filler for humans and well as dogs. It has valuable starches, protein, and vitamins. If corn is only a filler and humans, dogs, cattle, pigs, etc; pass whole kernels and therefore the perception is that it cannot be digested then what food value does corn have to any animal and why do we even grow it and why would I want to buy corn for my livestock. The fact of the matter is corn can be digested by all of the animals I have mentioned as well as birds. What can't be readily digested by most animals is the outer covering. Once you grind corn it becomes digestible and a very good food source. If you ran an experiment on two Human Beings ,with one being fed only Venison and the other fed only ground corn , the one being fed venison would die of malnutrition long before the one being fed ground corn!

I thought I was the only one to notice this! I have found several brands that i liked for a while (4-10 months depending on quality), but then the dogs start to look bad. One bag of a new feed and problem solved! I have considered puting mine on a weekly rotation of different feeds.
Keep the best, cull the rest!

I have noticed this as well. I am trying out my theory that mixing a couple different bags and mixing in some RAW food will eliminate this need to abondon ship every year on the feed.

Currently Im feeding Taste Of The Wild. I add 1 bag of Salmon, 1 bag of Bison, and 1 bag of Diamond Naturals Puppy. All three of these are free of Corn, Wheat, and Soy. When my dogs get a bit older, I will stop the Puppy and swap out with something else of similar quality. I have been doing this for 6 months with excellent results, but it might take a year or so longer before I can be sure its working.

I supplement with raw meats, either beef ribs or chicken about once a week.
