inexperienced or not enough nose?

Post by cooper »

I have a 15 month male that I just gotton back from the starting pen last month and have been bracing up with my old male since. Well the last couple of days I have been running him in a trio and have notice that when the rabbits is up that he doesn't open for several minutes into the run and is also opening inconsisently. Ran in a field that was chisled 4 years ago and has fist size to slightly larger water pockets and he couldn't smell anything and my other two were down to a walk until they got it into the woods and then the pup opened up just fine until the rabbit went back into the field and he quit barking but stayed packed up. Now yesterday in a different feild he opened up off the jump but still had a inconsisent mouth. He is mostly runnig in third and just wondering if he is getting enough scent? Any ideas or opinions welcomed. Tom Gross

YOUNG DOG

Tom

take him out and run him solo. Evaluate his performance for about an hour, if his peformance is better while running alone then dump your best dog on him. If his performance remains the same then continue with the brace, if his performance reverts back to what you have seen then your question has been answered. If running him solo his performance isn't any better than what you have seen, then continue to solo him and give him a chance to learn how to run a rabbit. Be patient, not all dogs progress at the same rate. Good luck

Yes Chris I have been wanting to run him solo but it's hard to jump a rabbit up around here with a pack let alone a just started pup! Heck just this week my little honey hole has had 3 group of beaglers huntining in it and hard telling how many people I haven't seen in there hunting. But I will try to get some solo time on him and see how he does. Thanks Tom Gross
