How much would you spend?

I had my my female beagle jump the fence a few days ago and she ended up getting hit by a vehicle, which didn't stop. i took her to the closes vet. After examing her without xrays, he could tell her elbow on front left leg was broke and need surgery. So he recommend the closed facility which was 10 mins away 24 hr care vet hospital. She ended up with 3 fractures in left front leg, 3 fractures in non-weight bearing parts of pelvis, and a fracture on the saccrum. She had no internal injuries, nerve, or muscluar damage just bones. The orthopedic surgeon vet said the leg defintley need surgery and she would like to place pen in saccrum (after research and obtaining 2 other vet opinions we decided against). I was told this time next year she should be chasing ol cottontail again after 8-12 weeks of crate rest and possible physical therapy(never heard of on animals), but she should never have another litter of pups. Just say I had to take out a small loan since the vet hospital does not take payments, just the full amount. And I am happy with my decision even if she only becomes a pet.

How do you determine how much to spend to heal one of your dogs? I just followed my heart.

If you don't follow your heart you will always second guess yourself. You are the one making the money so spend it how you see fit. No one in the world can answer that question but you.

I agree with Bobby.....I spent almost a grand on my hunting partner a year ago after he got run over.....he can't hear right now and can't always locate the dogs but it was a chance I took....he was one hell of a dog and my best friend....I'd do it again if I thought there was a chance a dog would fully recover....

I spent $1,300 a few years ago on a beagle with a ruptured uterus. I ended up having to put her down a year later due to complications, but that's sometimes the way it goes. In these situations, I try to look at whether or not I think the dog will bounce back from the injury, and I also look at the age of the dog. I try to be realistic, but sometimes the heart has a way of getting in the way.

I spent about $700 or so on a dog to try and save him. he ended up dieing on me a couple weeks after I got him back and that was with me pretty much hand feeding and watering him everyday. It was well worth the shot to me to try and save him but he died.

I say spend the cash you may only have one opportunity to enjoy the good ones!! I have recently paid more and invested more in my current hounds than I EVER thought I would. I am confident I have the best pack I have ever had and have breeding stock that will give me better dogs than they are if things work out. You get what you pay for in most cases. JMO.

I agree with all the other posts, you are the person spending the money so it is your decision. For me, I "love" my dogs but I am not emotionally attached to any of them. They are not my family. There is a point of diminishing returns when you have to let go. Letting go is difficult but it is a decision that I make logically, not emotionally. JMO

My old Rambo dog messed up his back when he was 3 yrs old.
Vet said to put him down or pay $4,000 for surgery.
The surgery worked!
Luckily, people bred to him as he worked off his expense and then some.
He'll be 14 in March, and i've enjoyed every year.

My pocket book is not as deep as some.I would not spend the money. You have to do whats right for you. I have never had any luck at the vet.If I have much wrong with a dog I do what I can at home to make them comfortable. If they need put down then I dig a hole in the back yard.I just put down about a month ago one of the best females I have owned in over 35 years of hunting. She would only eat a little every 2 or 3 days. This went on for 2 weeks I tried everything.I put her down while she was still up and about. So for me given my situation I would not spend the money..

I my self would spend any amount that i could spend with in reason,I had a Lab for 15 years that was a rescue and had to put her down due to going blind and would wonder off and I would have to track her down and carry her home but my dogs are like my kids, some will hunt like a mad man and others just eat and make a mess but they belong to me, my reasponibility!!

Had 1 of my best hounds jump off the tailgate onto a cement driveway a 1 1/2 yrs ago and broke 1 of his spinal process in his back. It did not paralize him, but he was in a tremendous amount of pain. My vet reccomended surgey, and honeslty I was against it. Figured I would never be able to run him again. He wouldn't like that and neither would I. I asked the vet for all my options without surgery. With some medication, 8 weeks of complete rest, and gradually running him again like therapy, He healed up real good. He was an ARHA PP Rch at the time. I brought him back to the trials last sept. and now, a year later he has 10 champion wins and is the high point hound in the North Region. You would never know he was ever close to ending his running career. I am happy with my decision, but I took a chance too!!
