one thing about Beagles!!!!!!
MOST are SMART They learn!!!! and most just Want to please, kinda like a kid STERN VOICE and a GOOD ass Whippin can make a difference. ya Dont have to beat the hound just give him a good SMACK on the Nose or a twist of the Ear. Just letting them KNOW that you are not HAPPY is Enough, When he Does back off just Praise him For it also a little rubbin up and a pat here and there does Wonders So does a Good Stern Word or cussin they get the meaning!!! most young Dogs are just like Kids Sometimes you have to tell em over and over but they Finally get it!!!

Joey, like some of the other guys are saying ,I would not zap him when he gets to that rabbit. I used to train dogs for a living, and on some of the guard dogs, we would want them poison proof. We would set up many different scenarios and zap them so they would not eat or take food from strangers. Every dog is different, but look at it this way, when they chase a deer, we zap them to stop, and now when that male gets to the end of the line, you will zap him for finally catching that rabbit, every dog is different, but I would believe that it would deter his desire. That being said, once he gets that rabbit in his mouth, a good old fashioned spanking while giving him a command like MINE, could work. You might want to practice first in your yard, and there should not be any other dogs around , if you truly want to break him, the first time there should be no distractions,.Your leah dog will want to pick up the rabbit and that will get he male to automatically pull the rabbit from her, leading to him eating it . Depending on the dog, it might take many training lessons to stop him, but with other dogs around it will add to him wanting to take the rabbit. I hate to cull any of my dogs, but I have sold dogs to people that have fell in love with them, and I did not like them for on reason or another, but I usually waite until they are 2 years old., Example, I have a 3 year old female, had her since a pup, she handles great, hunts good and does not run trash, but does not give enough mouth , and only tongues if a super hot line, so I will be selling her. It is my preference, nothing wrong ,some people love that ,some people hate that, but I own her and feed her, so have given her enough time, and does not suite me, so she will go this season. By the way, had some cousins come in from sicili last night, and will be taking on hare hunting within next couple of weeks, will get on video and upload.
Try this Joey, go to pet store, buy a metal choke chain collar and put in on him, when he picks up the rabbit, attach your leash to the choke chain and give a good yank on the leash,at the same time saying mine. His natural reaction will be to drop the rabbit, once he drops that rabbit praise him and give him a treat so he is rewarded.
Try it for at least 5 or 6 times, should work. Then when comes up on a dead rabbit, with a harsh voice say MINE and he should come to you looking for a treat, which you must have ready for him. Again, he should be alone to do this. Good Luck. Ciao.

joey
i agree with the above posts not to hit him with the tt i think that buy hitting him it would discourage him from running a rabbit at all,i use collars for trash breaking and handling issues but never shock one for doing what they have been bred to do.I know in this politically correct world we live in you hate to say give him a good country ass whippin but thats what he needs not the tt, lot of difference between whippin and abuse jmo
best of luck Donald

joey,
I was out feeding my dogs last night and they gave me the answer. I have a 13 inch bitch that is a real 13 inch bitch if you get my drift. She is little and scrappy and her down side is she thinks she is 20 inches tall and convinced the other three of the same thing. I have to feed her separate because she can have a full gut but if she sees the other, much bigger, and even my big male, head in the direction of the food bowl or on something she thinks is hers, she will lay the smack down on them. It's like they say it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog. I'll lay you odds that if you could find a buddy who might possess such a dog that will knock that male on his ass when he tried to grab the rabbit, he would stop.

I have yet to hunt this little female with he others because she is half their size and I only solo her, so I don't know if she has the same issue as your male. But after seeing her in action in the yard last night, I would not be surprised.

Peace,
NYH

I have read no where near this entire thread.......probably not even a 1/4 of it but I'll give you my 2 cents anyway joeyman. Having a good dog like Pistol gone sure makes your pack and your hunts a whole lot different I'm sure. And you'll probably never have another exactly like him but just try to use what he was as a measuring stick for Thunder and any other future hounds you own. And stick to what you like......if given the time they need they don't come around the way you'd like then find another. JMO

had all the rabbits on the tailgate when we got done. he kept trying to jump up on the tailgate. so i set him on it. first thing he tried to attack the rabbit. lets just say he didn't after i was thru scolding him. I even held a rabbit to his mouth and he wanted nothing to do with it. Held it there for a minute he didn't want to bite it at all. I'll repeat till message is clear. Trust me I strongly doubt it'll effect his hunt or desire. the dog is rabbit crazy nothing will stop him. He ran with a giant thorn stuck in his paw today I didnt know till I got home. He's like an OX

Good job Joey. The best way to teach him is with fresh rabbit meat because that's what your trying to break him from. The reason he didn't get the idea the 1st. time is he already had his treat in his mouth when you gave him the boot. Work with him with fresh rabbits every time you hunt and you can break him. You never know he may get the idea and start retrieving them to you. Good hunting.

sorry a rabbit GUN-DOG shall NOT EAT MY RABBIT. and thats just my opinion. to each their own. I like the fact that he wants the rabbit bad but put that energy towards running the rabbit and jumping the rabbit that is where it counts not him eating the thing.

eating the rabbit does nothing for him but fill his belly.

we had 8 dogs on the ground this morning pack split my little daisy took on her own rabbit. If i've never told you guys before here is the thing with daisy. Her and I always get rabbits like this. Always. I've been known to hook up my little daisy and go off on my own sometimes just to hunt with her. anyway she pushed the rabbit nice and easy by herself rabbit come out I shot wounded it. I really wasn't sure if I hit it or not. but she kept going past where I shot went in the brush and stopped. i heard some movement in the leaves sure enough there was daisy standing over the rabbit licking it and sniffing it NOT EATING IT i went over gave ol daisy a pat on the head got my rabbit and moved on down the way. that is how it should be IMO! no eating of the rabbit

Joey, you should breed us a line of beagles that don't like to eat rabbits! Guys say they can breed them deer proof, so I'm sure it's possible!
