Re: dropping nuts
Herb,
Cryptorchidism is the medical name for the condition you are talking about. Early in my nursing career I viewed a couple of surgical procedures to correct this condition. Often it effects only one of the testes. I would guess they can do the same dogs as with humans but it might be costly. The earlier it is done the better though because it can cause sterility and also can increase the chances of developing testicular cancer.
Best of luck with your pup.

Re: dropping nuts
my vet told me not to breed this trait because it is hereditary and will surface again in the offspring just like overbite or underbite and it is known to cause the dog to get cancer but the only one I had do this was bought as a pup so I just counted my loss and had him cut just my experiance .

Re: dropping nuts
well i called 6 vets 5 out of six said this is a very bad genetic trait that he would surely pass on to his off spring and had to come from his blood line witch i dont believe the sixth vet said it was not that big of a deal an easy prosedure to get them down and that it might pop up less than one in a hundred pupps

Re: dropping nuts
As others have mentionrd this is a genetic problem that is/can be hereditary as i have seen it when I had coondogs.I had a nice Nite Champion male Bluetick and one day the vet was examing him and said "this dog is a monorchid meaning he was a one nutter [the other testicle had never dropped still retained in his groin].The vet said if you breed him he'll probably throw it in his pups.I had no idea that the dog had this condition and he had already been bred to several times. We went back and checked and sure enough he had sons with the same condition.A one nutter can produce just fine and the vet also said that some males with both testicles not dropped [cryptorchid ] also sometimes can produce sperm but are sometimes just as apt to be sterile.

Re: dropping nuts
So here's a question- I don't mess with male dogs much at all- but at what age can you expect both testicles to drop?

Re: dropping nuts
They usually drop down into the scrotum at about 4-5 months old.

Re: dropping nuts
One of the males from my last litter only dropped one. I never even bothered to register him, because I wont breed him because of it. Not to mention he is a genetic freak and over 17". But my son loves him just the same and claimed the pup as his own.
