Feeding Pregnant Bitch

Post by cf beagles »

Is there anything that y'all feed to a pregnant bitch to insure she has plenty of milk when pups are born. Could be a particular brand of dog food a homemade remedy and/or a supplement.... anything. I want to make sure my bitch has plenty of milk when her pups are born in the middle of July.

I had a litter back in April. I put her on milkaid. also switched her Royal Canin Puppy chow. Also gave her a raw egg once a day at feeding time. crack it over the feed and mix it all around into the kibble.

Thats just what I did and it worked for me.

Others may have different method's

How far along is she? the milkbar will fill about a week before she whelps and give you some idea what kind of milker she is.

We use Milk-aid, helps with milk and prevent acid milk.
After the whelping, .5 - 1 cc oxytocin will help shrink the uterus, clean-out and cause the bitch to drop all the milk she has made. Since milk production is regulated by demand and genetics, I think this will jump-start more milk being produced.jmho

Keep plenty fresh water to bitch and we feed wet food to help keep hydration up. Mix calf replacer milk on her feed also.
Feed all she wants after whelping, a fat dog in this heat is rough situation for a hound.

Get the bitch used to her whelping box/pen a couple weeks before due, make sure cool and lots of shade. Pups cry and scatter when too hot, mama move them or don't take care of them.
Good luck with the heat... ;)
