breeding question - not locking up

Post by rhaley »

I posted this same topic on the other board. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

This is my first attempt at breeding my own dogs. This past Sat. I put my male dog in with one of females who is in heat right now. This was around day 11 or 12 since she came in. The male only started showing interest on day 10 or 11. She was flagging for him and she allowed him to mount her, but he was never able to lock up with her and after a few minutes she started getting restless and started to flip out. So, I separated them and tried a few other times this weekend, but it was the same thing. I even tried to hold her still while he was mounting her. She stayed calm then, but the male still wasn't able to lock up and appeared like he may have been shooting off with out locking up and penetrating her. Any one know why this is and what can be done to help out? There is very little height difference between them.

This is both of these dogs first attempts at breeding. The female is just under 6 and the male is 9. I would have tried to breed him earlier in life, but never had a female that I thought was worthy enough. I am afraid that it may be getting late in the heat cycle now to get a successful breeding and may have to wait until the next cycle or even the one after that depending on when she comes in, but I am afraid that since the male is getting up in age that he may pass on before I can breed him and the female will be getting up in years if I wait too much longer.

When he mounts her. get a hold of him and guide him in!

1st pour water all over the male...keep him from heat exhaustion.

2nd, You may have to look at height? I have had to build platforms for the males to raise them up a little. Three or four sheets of plywood works.

3rd, If all else fails you may have to guide things to the right spot. You have to get creative and do what ever it takes sometimes.

good luck!

some males get trying so hard that they pull out before they start gettin hard enough to knot, then they stand there and shoot it in the floor, and if you watch when they do that they keep gettin bigger, what i normally do is when the male gets in grab him by the collar and pull him gently up towards the females head ,and hold him there for about 45 to 60 seconds by then in most cases they should be tied

First off in the heat i would breed at night if it takes more than 15 to 20 minutes to tie seperate for a while and try again when he catches his breath.First time females can be the worst tie her head with a double coupler and let him go at it.I would try 2 to 3 times a day untill he got the job done{according to the heat} after they tie the first time it will be a breeze from there. Good luck
