Briar Pants

Post by Goduece »

Looking for some briar pants that will protect from top to bottom front and back. Does anyone make these. I have a new pair of columbias and they work great where the briar guard is, but I am sliced up starting about 4'' above my knees. Any suggestions?

Hey Goduece
Try Dans Hunting Gear out of Sugar Creek ,Ohio their stuff is made by the Amish and it is very good clothing. They even do custom orders. I just bought a pair of chaps from Eisenhut Dog Supplies which are briarproof front and back and they work very well. Chip Eisenhut of Eisenhut Dog Hunting Supplies ,Charleston, WV (304) 984-1430 sells Dans products. His web site is http://www.eisenhutdogsupplies.com . Phil :D

+1 on Dans, very well protected top to bottom, the waterproof version does not breath and gets a little cold on the skin if not wearing longjohns.

These folks are friends of the WICK company owners and they bought the patterns, equipment etc. from WICK. The former owners also trained them to make the chaps and brush coats. I've not purchased any chaps from them but I did buy their brush coat a few months ago. The materials and craftsmanship are top drawer. I would anticipate their chaps to be exact duplicates of the WICK chaps.

Regarding the Filson chaps........ be sure to get the style with the zipper unless you don't mind hopping around on one leg for 15 minutes or so trying to get them on or off over your boots.

I will give my observation on the three that I have currently and have been doing comparisons....

Dans.... bought waterproof bibbs nd chaps last SPring.... great for moderate to warmer temps. I have used the chaps more
frequent than the bibbs... not a year old yet and would probably have to look at replacing this year after spring running.
Very comfortable... well made... they do not "Turn" the briars... but do prevent the majority from doing a lot of damage.

Reasonably priced for the overall value of the product.

Nite Lite.... their chaps and uninsulated bibbs compared to that of Dans as far as the construction and composition of material.
they are an OD green look where Dan's is the brown.
I have the Insulated bibbs as well as the Deluxe (Three in one) coat. Again for the purpose they were purchases (warmths and briar
protection) they are well suited. Being as the bibbs are insulated... very few oppertunities to wear... but the few times I have
used them in the year I have had them... you can see snags in the material...

The pricing of the Nite Lite is a bit higher... fairly the craftsmanship is a bit higher end compared to Dan's.

I recently received my Mule Bibbs... I purchased them with the waterproof lining. Took a bit longer to get them (6 weeks approx)
but to be fair was at the end of October when the absence of Wicks was being realized and the harvest of the Amish communities
was in full swing (Mule is hand made by the Amish like Dan's). So Mule as well as Dan's was behind on shipping. The Mule material is
by far the better of the three mentioned. They are more expensive... but the presumed life of the product justifies it. I orderd
chaps today... unlined. THeir bomber style jacket is tops so far with me... go to the trading post and look at the Custom Embroidry Hats
thread... last page you will see my jacket (My wife does the Embroidered hats). They do have pants as well, but imo CHaps is the way
to go for the moderate temps and bibbs for the cooler running. THey do in fact "Turn" the briars.

We are a distributor of Mule... tried to get hooked up with Dan's but we must have a store front in order to be able to sell their
goods... one day we will be big enough and I will appraoch them again.

Hope this gives you a little more to go on... I run every chance I get... and I am in the briars with my hounds... so I do put
them thru the test.
