Ivomec dosage: One tenth of a cc, .10, for every ten pounds of body weight. I inject it under the skin. For a 25lb dog it breaks down to 1/4 of a cc. This is a very little amount. I've been doing this for well over 10 years and have never loss a dog due to kidney and liver failure. As a matter of fact my dogs live to be 12-15 years old. I only give it during the warm months or whenever mosquitoes are on the prowl. My dogs are kenneled a half mile from the Chickahomony Swamp and River. This works for me. If it's not broken, then don't fix it.

Dog down...with kidney failure...

This is why I use the Ivomec paste formulation- it's much easier to use. I used to use the liquid swine formula but after accidently overdosing a pup I switched to the paste. This 10 week old pup went into convulsions and my vet said there was nothing to be done but keep it hydrated and hope. It took nearly a week but the pup eventually recovered. Though we anticipated some level of kidney failure in later life, it never came to pass and this dog is now 12 years old and still running hare. I have been faithfully using Ivermectin paste for many years and have never had any indication of renal failure but this could very well have something to do with a genetic predisposition. It may be that renal failure is a result of a combination of everything mentioned in this thread.
Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost 2 good hounds this year to the same problem. Both were field champs, one was the 2001 Big Pack Hound of the Year and the other was 4th that same year. My vet said they were suffering from kidney failure. I have used Ivomec since I started with beagles nearly 8 years ago. The down side of not using it is heart worms. I plan to continue using as I always have during the warm part of the year and not at all during the winter. I also use pyrantel wormer. I did go one step further and had a blood test run on my 2 dogs to find the level of protien in my 2 dogs. The level of protien was nearly 9 times that of a normal healthy dog. I had been feeding diamond dog feed for nearly 8 years as well but I have since started feeding a lower protien feed. What is right or wrong I have no idea? I will try the lower protien feed for a while and have my remaining dogs checked to see if this has had any effect.
Thanks,
Michael

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified propylene glycol as an additive that is "generally recognized as safe" for use in food. It is used to absorb extra water and maintain moisture in certain medicines, cosmetics, or food products. It is a solvent for food colors and flavors.
Boomer, thanks for your information on propylene glycol. I looked the above up on a website. It gave a lot of technical info, but nothing really bad about it. I'm still more concerned about the 2 cc's of Ivomec than the 98 cc's of proplyene glycol.

Bootleg, sorry to hear of your loss and all you others losses!
What bag feed (yellow, etc.) were you using in the Diamond to have 9 times needed protein and what did you go to? My brother has dogs live a long time and he feeds the yellow bag year round 21/12.
We have the Vet give the 6 month heartworm shot when flies, etc start and it last until they disappear. Of course, I have heard there are a few that have had a bad experience of some kind with it. We haven't, and have not had a dog get heartworms since we started using it. The Vet says that is the same with the other folks dogs he has given it to.

John,
In my earlier days of field trialing I fed Green Diamond when I ran alot then in the summer when I would not be running as much I would feed the Yellow Diamond. Then I switched to The Burgandy (red) diamond and that is what i fed until just recently. Now I feed dog chow which is 21/10 or 21/12 about the same as yellow diamond. I really don't know if this is going to help? I wish I had the answers or knew someone who did because I would have loved to have had 1 last year with my 2 hounds.
Thanks,
Michael
