Re: One hour conversation!?
I have always enjoyed talking to Rick Giermata. He is as full of sh2t as anybody else, but he knows a good dog and has seen some of the "greats". Rick can tell some tall tales that will make you laugh two days after you talked to him. I need to give him a call soon and fill him in on everything and after this past year I could use a good laugh.
I also enjoyed talking to Bobby Vest and Lynn Perkins at the VA State hunt. They both have a wealth of knowledge and know a good dog when they see one. Sometimes if you keep an open mind and open ears you can learn something even if you know it all.

Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?

Re: One hour conversation!?
Tom Dornin, Frank Reese, Rev John Parks, John Toy, Elmer Gray, “Willet” …there are so many great ones that simply “know or knew dogs”. I know most of who I mention is now gone, but a couple beaglers that I have talked to and have got to know in the last few years are Larry Perry in WV and Jim Lane in Ohio. If you have not, you need to call these fellows and just have a conversation about a hunting beagle. These fellows can quote pedigrees of 40 years ago like they wrote them yesterday. They also both “know dogs”. Many hours in the field and many breedings and cullings for hunting machines, learning from the old school method of trial & error and personal experience. They can spot the good ones a mile away, even as pups. They also know what it takes to get one and keep it going for generations. Lots of knowledge to be got in a conversation with those boys. Good houndsman and very truthful about the good and the bad in their own or anybody elses dogs.
Re: One hour conversation!?
Talk is cheap,
I would much rather spend a day with one of the best, without them knowing I was there. My comments might hinder me from learning something of value.
Im also certain some of the best dont just give away all their secrets just because you ask.
I recall a conversation I had with Ken Racine (Birch Lake Kennels). I was asking him questions about how he feeds, conditions, picks the future best from a litter etc. etc.....to which he responded...."Im not going to tell you everything". I thought that was a harsh response at first, but have come to learn it was a fair one.
I would like to follow Joe K (green bay kennels) around for a day. I believe he has one of the best conditioning regiments, coupled with a top line of dogs and I think I could learn some things, especially from a trialing stand point. I was stationed overseas when Joe came back on the beagling scene. I look forward to meeting him.
