If this is a potential future cross (dogs owned by someone else) the best bet is to go watch the parents and / or any pups out of them run....that will give you your best indication of what to expect out of the upcoming pups. I have never seen a Lumberjack son or daughter run (that I know of), but have seen some further on down the line. They typically are known to be very hard hitting and a lot of foot. That may be what your looking for, or it may not.

Lumberjack won't be contributing any more than 25%, neither will Prime Time. Lumber was an IFC and a good reproducer, Primetime was finished and a good reproducer as well. I wouldn't worry about the timidness. I've seen a fair amount of dogs out of Lumber and grandpups, and from "my experience" (be that as it may) the timidness reported is greatly exaggerated. Especially when we are talking grandpups, which yours would be.

I'd ask if anyone knew what the dams (top and bottom) were like since they will be contributing just as much as the males. ;)

I don't use Lumberjack in my breeding ;just my personal preference, but other knowledgeable beaglers love the Lumberjack dogs and have had great success with it. They say FC Branko's Freejack (Lumberjack son) is something else! Wags & Floyd have produced some great hounds using Freejack on a Prime Time bitch. The dog, Mr. Wilson (said to be a nice dog) , is by a Lumberjack male & a Prime Time bitch. My friend has two young hounds by Freejack & a different Prime Time bitch that he loves; not shy at all. But really, as pointed out by Bev, the dams' side has as much or more to do with it than the sires. Good Luck, Greg Wells

what i am looking at most here is that they compliment each others rnning styles//and i think they will add to their strengths by breeding to one another..i can say that tho cause i run them both...if you all could see what i see when runnin you would see my point

Joeyman, I think as long as you feel the sire and dams running styles are similar and they have good strong points, then you have made a good choice. I was always told to select them for there ability then check pedigrees. I have just bred my lumberjack bitch last week to a Maravic's x Branko male. I choice him because of his ability to win LPH trials in classes of 50 & 42 then the following weekend turn around and win an spo trial on cottontail. My bitch has the same capability by taking ribbons in GDB, LPH and SPO. My bitch is a very accurate smooth running dog, she is also Freejacks littermate sister. Well best of luck in your choice.

I'm not an expert by no means what so ever, but since I had Calie here at the house once upon a time, I will give my opinion. I don't know anything about Jack, other than I picked him up for Tracy when he bought him from a guy here locally. Calie had some good points about her, but in my opinion had some things about her I couldn't tolerate either. She had good hunt to her, explosive speed, and could jump her share. However, she was a really high maintenance dog that it seemed that no matter how much I ran her, she was too rattle mouthed for me. She was good somedays and mouthy the next. At times I would see her blow out the wrong way, sometimes being directionly challenged. But if you think the male you are going to breed her to, will correct these faults, well best of luck. But look at it this way, they'll always be those faults in the woodpile, just waiting to show themselves....

I had Calie as a young dog ; too much mouth for me, but I thought she might have gotten better. Sorry, just telling the truth. Her sister, FC Talkabout Kellie was a great dog, but I think she might have been the only one in that litter. I tried another female in that litter also; too little brains or too much mouth; however you want to word it.

Good point. I have a bitch that is a grandpup to lumberjack. i really like her, but she has similiar faults to calie. If she's not ran she'll "pop" in the check and over-run, but when she's on her game look out. I bred her to a tighter-mouthed Striker male. 4 of the 6 pups are loose in the check, and two hand-up in the check, something neither parent does. His strong point didn't cancel out her faults. i won't leave my house without my dog, but i probably won't bred her again.
Keep the best, cull the rest!

I'm not saying Calie is a piece of junk; I haven't seen her in years. I'm just saying as a started pup, she gave too much mouth for me, but I am VERY critical on my dogs. I want them to show super talent & potential right when they start or I don't keep them. I have heard others say she was a good dog, and she must do a lot of things right or she wouldn't get hunted like she has. But I made a post a while back when Prime Time dogs started placing in trials; don't breed hounds just because they are littermates or sired by a certain dog. Look at the dog's ability & conformation(build) first and decide whether it is worthy of being bred, then look at the pedigree. Prime Time threw several nice hounds that can help the breed, but he also threw some nuts that could destroy the breed. Be resposible breeders when choosing to make a cross; don't breed for a nice pedigree just to sell pups.

Some of the dogs in question were heavily inbred with Jack of All trades. I know he was a dominating producer but anytime you inbreed a hound like they did him, faults will surface. Shy, timid and gray color are things I have seen in a number of dogs from that breeding. "I realize some of you own pups from this breeding that are bolder than any pups you have ever seen." Please dont go there.....

Its getting quite a few generations away from these hounds but the traits were locked in and going back to linebreeding it will make them surface......
