Try boiling rabbit and giving him the cooled broth instead of water, you can mix the meat in the canned food too. Check with your vet I'm sure he'd approve.I never had a dog turn down rabbit broth or meat, even had pups that were only a couple weeks old laping it up after there mother died.Good luck you both got a long road ahead

Joeyman....
I have not followed my usual habbit of checking what is happening on the forum as I should.
Finally logged on last night and folowed your story.
At first it seemed rather grim... tears of compassion, hell how could anybody not get emotional over
a hound suffering and fighting like that.
Then the pictures of your female trying to comfort him.... those are keepers my friend!!!
I am happy that pistol is home and although slow, is improving. I have no words of advice as I am
a young houndsman as well and have to rely on all of these fine folks on here as you are.
Our thoughts are with you and Pistol... hoping for a long lasting recovery.

I'm still working at it. He seems a little better but the not eating on his own or drinking on his own just still concerns me. I tried left over chicken last night. He sniffed it up good seemed like he was about to take a bite but NOPE he didn't. I still use the vet food in a can. I got it down to where I make a lil ball of it and drop it into his mouth and he chews it up like he is eating just won't do it by himself its so weird. Same with water. He won't drink I use a 12ml syringe suck up water and squirt into his mouth and he uses his tonge just like he is drinking out of the bucket. I don't get it. I'll keep doing this till he eats and drinks on his own. I'm trying to put wieght on him his ribs are showing some and so are his hips

I had a pup years ago that got parvo and would not eat anything until I gave it some liverwurst lunch meat. Tried all the other stuff again and nothing so I kept feeding liverwust. Pup recovered and was fine. Just recently I had a good female that got cancer and would not eat. She didn't seem to be in pain so I blended liverwust and water and poured it over her food and kept her eating for over a month before she started to suffer and I had her put down. If he will eat anything it will be liverwurst. Danny

joey, when i used to bear hunt an old timer who had hunted all of his life with hounds and all over the continent would pump his dogs up with a little B12 to keep them going when they got ran down. when a dog gets ran down they will tire out and lose a little appetite. the b12 gave them a boost in energy and would also bring there appetite back. i think he used to pick the b12 up at tsc. i would ask your vet about giving pistol something like that. i have heard of foxhound guys using the b12 too. there are also some store bought canine vitamins that have b12 in them. just a thought to ask your vet next time. also you could check out some powder milk and mix with water. use a pop top type bottle like a gatorade bottle and use that. kinda like feeding a baby or puppy but he doesnt need to suck on it. or the syringe should work. just sit there and squirt it in his mouth. tsc also has the powder milk. i havent used it in awhile but i think it was very reasonable priced. i used to use it for pups and when i had left overs i would save it and come winter time mix it in the big dogs food with water when it was cold out. it kept them fattened up real good.
how is pistol walking now? i would love to see pistol recovering a little quicker for you.

It might have been collateral damage from, or in addition to something else, but this almost sounds like the dog has suffered a stroke. Has your vet mentioned it as a possibility? I've tried to keep up with this thread but I'm sure I've missed some posts, so if this has been addressed, my apologies for the repeat. Wishing the best for your dog.

About that powdered milk- I took some puppy milk replacer, mixed with some water, (just a couple teaspoons in a cup of water) & poured it over Purina One puppy Chow for a pregnant bitch as a suppliment. She needed some weight put on her & it worked real good. Hartz Mtn. makes 1 kind I got it at WalMart. And when the pups started eating solid food, I poured some on their puppy Chow. It's extremely high in fat & protein with some vitamins.

As of last night Nov 24 2009 I got pistol to eat HOT DOGS.......lol I went to the store picked up pedialite electroylite hot dogs and yogurt for pistol.
When I put the hot dog to his nose he about bit my finger. I kept getting hot dog after hot dog to him. He ate 4 hot dogs. Then didn't want anymore after that. Still not drinking but I made him drink with the syringe.
This morning I let him out for medicine. I saw a big bunch of stool under the pen. It was him sort of looked runny. At least he is passing stool. I let him out fed him a can of vet food and gave him his meds. And got out another hot dog and he ate it from my hands. After that he took off in the yard and he was running. I haven't seen him run in over a week. That was cool to see. IT was like watching a kid learn how to ride a bike. He had to think about it at first then he took off. Not real fast but he ran. Maybe a few more days and I can get him to eat other things besides hot dogs. And my main goal is to get him to drink on his own. That vet canned food has alot of moisture in it.
Bev.......It does seem like he had a stroke but the vet didn't say he did. only thing that came up in the test was TICK BORNE ILLNESS. I'm going to destroy every tick I see.......lol I'm coming beware this is a warning to all ticks. I hate them nasty things.

that stinks joey.. Tuna Fish is my miracle food. I will make a half cup of rice cook it normal. When it is done pour can of tuna fish in it and stir it up. Let it cool and give it to them. Starch in the rice will give them energy and settle their stomachs. Tuna high in protein and the oils have Omegas in them.
