How many of you have switched styles of dogs?

Post by Robert W. Mccoy Jr »

I am switching gears.

I have always ran dogs that were fast but pretty close.

I have found with hare breed stuff I have had to go through many many dogs to get ones that were close enough to suite me.

I finnally give up. After this year and going through a ton of pups that didn't work out.

I'm switching to a little more conservative dog.

I like fast hair breed dogs but I do not like that everytime you breed them you get faster.

I am going to run a more conservative pp style dogs for a while and see how I like a little more conservative breed dog.

How many of you guys have switched styles of dogs.

Robert, I recently done exactly as you, except the exact opposite!

I kept medium speed, progressive pack style dogs for years. I accumilated, after alot or work, money and time, a dang good pack of medium speed dogs too. However, the more conservative style kind of "lost it's luster", if you will. In my early days I kept fast dogs and while I did enjoy the more conservative dogs, the "excitement" of the fast race, the rabbit coming by with his ears laid back, running for his life, led me back to faster, harder hitting dogs.

Late last summer I made a hard decision and decided to sell out my kennel of medium speed dogs and go back to Little Pack/Mid-West style dogs. I sold some fine medium speed hounds to a couple of guys that they love, and have had a real headache in rebuilding my kennel with faster dogs, to say the least!

Finding hard-hitting, fast dogs that are not rough and wild has been a chore. I am minus alot of time and my wallet is alot lighter. I am still in the process of rebuilding and it at times has been very frustrating. Finding fast AND accurate dogs has proven to be a tough job. I have a few pups here now that I have high hopes for. Time will tell! :!:

Robert,

When I first started out running and hunting beagles, I had all LP style dogs. I thought world turned around LP style. But one year about 4 years ago I got a PP style dog because My runnin buddies were converting to PP. So I thought I would give it a try. Once I started running more and more PP style dogs I loved IT!!!!!!!! I'm not bashing LP style, every man has their own style they love. But personaly A dog that isn't quite as fast as a LP dog BUT is a lot smoother and can stay on the line a lot better than a LP dog will get the rabbit around to you just as fast, or faster. Just my opinion. Because I used to own LP dogs and they would get on a rabbit and just flat burn it but always a lot of checks and long break downs. My PP hounds are medium-fast but stay on the line and are alot smoother and just seem to run a rabbit the way it should be ran. Not to go off on a big speach but If you convert to PP style I think it is a wise choice. As I said earlier every man has their own style. Just my 2 cents. Jesse[/u]

Well, I can say this. I wont tolerate cold trailin any more from my hounds
and found the faster hare breeding hounds dont do this. Plus they often have the hunt to go all day and are often intelligent to boot. Yes, Robert on the down side it is hard to find them that dont want the front all the time, will slot up, and wont booger up your rabbit race all the time. I am leaning toward PP style hounds and possible crossess off of hare hounds to get where I want to go. DFJ crossed of hare hound 3/4 that is, but to answer the orginal question I have changed once in 9 years. Good luck , keep the best cull the rest

I started off with two of the slowest line walkers you ever did see, they were as honest and true as you could ask for. Now all I have are LP dogs and love it. I enjoy the fast chase and at the same time it is a bit rough but they do circle a rabbit. We ran yesterday morning for two hours and only ran three rabbits, for me that is a good performance by my dogs. We had long chases and the rabbits used the standing water around here to their advantage. One rabbit ran down blacktop road and really lost my dogs. I have a female Syris pup and will hare breed her in a couple of years to a dog that uses his speed and nose as a combination. The stud dog has very few checks because when he needs to fly he does and crawls when need be.

Robert,
I am kinda like you, I have had some good L.P. dogs and I feel I still have some dogs that can compete in L.P. But I like a dog that can hang on to the rabbit insted of losing it every 100yds or so.
I just like the idea P.P. has as far as the hunting dog format.
And I never did have a dog that was good at counting to 15.
You take a dog that can hang onto a rabbit for a full circle with no breakdowns and running as fast as their nose will allow, thats the dog I'll take, day in and day out.
And I will tolerate no coldtrailing.
I was judging a cast in L.P. one day and I had a rabbit come out of the timber and crossed a pretty big wide open field, when the dogs came out of the timber they scattered and ran that rabbit 5 dogs wide all the way across the field, guess what, when they all got to the other side none of them had the rabbit and had no idea which one had had it or where they had lost it at. I made a comment to the guy that was helping me judge about hopefully we didnt run up on this rabbit if he was leaving a trail this big, he might over take the dogs.
A member of the cast heard my comment and pulled me off to the side after the cast was over and said, Trent you have to remember you are judging L.P.
I told him that L.P. has nothing to do with dogs running a rabbit like that.
He wasnt mad and I wasnt either, but it was a good laugh anyways.
How in the world did I get off on that.
O well run what you like.
Trent

Roller, you're right about that too....

I started switching styles of dogs BEFORE I sold out completely.

After the sell-out, I took some time off and managed to get back a few spots to run. It was tough too. Not alot of spots, but a few, enough to run a few hounds. I will probably never keep the numbers of dogs I once did simply because of the lack of running grounds around here. I work alot of hours and dont have the time to drive 50 miles or more one way to get to running grounds. One of my best running grounds got closed off to everyone because of the actions of a couple, but after some time, recently the owner allowed me and one other guy back on the property to run dogs, nobody else. I'm thankful for that!

I had already started my switchover to faster dogs when I lost several pieces of running grounds to developments, some tree-huggers buying some farms, etc. I sold those dogs too, including one LP RCH and a couple of good young hounds that were running and learning well. I had determined to quit period. Nowhere to run dogs, no need to keep dogs. During the time I had no hounds, I started talking to a few landowners and after some time, managed to get permission to a couple of places to run hounds. Beagling is in one's blood and after securing a couple of places to cast dogs, I bought a few fast-bred dogs again, mainly pups. I'm working on these pups now, and they should finish out as fast speed, run to catch type dogs (hopefully!).

There you have it HighRoller....

I was contemplating switching formats, not necessarily dogs. I primarily run LP, but did give PP a try. I wanted to make sure I liked it before I started selling and buying dogs. I took one of my LP champion females, she placed well, and I've never been back. She is the slowest dog I own and ran in front of the pack in both casts. I even got commencts like "boy that little bluetick can fly". I decided it just wasn't for me. So I still have my big, crazy, 5 wide giant bunny chasing, LP dogs.....I just like em fast. I know several guys in my area that have switched to PP and they do love it.
