And I will ask you this...have you ever paid more that $100 for a deer runner?

Yes, I have for a real good deer runner.

NC Beagler your post was not insulting at all to me. Like you said I have seen people give away deer dogs but I have also some people give away rabbit dogs too. It really comes down to what you want to feed and can hunt.
A good deer runner can not run anything but a deer, can't be mouthy, must jump and run their own deer and one with a pack (must be able to do both),must have the brains and nose to run deer on the coldest of days and the hottest/driest of days, must be able to trial a deer after it has been shot (all wounded deer needs to be recovered),have quitting sense (don't want one to be gone all day),know how to come back where they were released, good kennel manners, not gunshy or manshy , be able to bay the wounded deer , not ill tempered and must obey the owner.

There are a lot of dogs that will run deer but will not do those things but you said what was a good deer beagle.

I'm not sure about you Bunny, but I've culled my share of deer dogs just like rabbit dogs. Some of them would burn a deer but was shy or gunshy or.... you name it, I've had it.

These guys are right, there is good and bad deer dogs like any other type hound. I'll keep quiet on some of the best one's I've seen because I know there are some Branko owners on here and we all know they are trash free. ;)

Bunnyseeker - I edited my previous message, b/c I re-read it and it sounded mean and that is not how I meant to come across.

Guys I just back from picking up a deer runner - 3 miles from where I dropped the tail-gate. Thanks to good country folk that tie your dog up and call the number on the tag. I'm trying to make this one a rabbit dawg as he has potential, but he'd rather run a deer. Have lit him up at least a dozen times and eveytime I think I have him cured he slips away from the pack and is off to the races! This morning before church I ran them and he got away from me before I realized what he was on and he either got out of my tri-tronic's range or just kept on a running through it. Now he can burn up a deer and run all day long - but does me no good as I can't run dogs on deer in this part of NC. :D

That's right. Whatever game floats your boat. Many a beagle have also been trained and run on fox - still are. Frank Reese of the Gay bloodlines ran his beagles on both. 30-40 years ago this was very commonplace. When did we become such "rabbit snobs"? Lol!
