This will vary on the area you live in. Just call the vet and ask what shots are recommend. You can pick up most of the shots at a Tractor Supply or fleet/tack store.

There is a lot of debate as to how long vaccinations are good for. Some people say they need boosters every year, while others say a vaccinated puppy is good for life.

Here in Wisconsin a dog needs to have a rabies shot every three years done by a vet to be ''legal.'' Some areas around the country have rabies clinics for free or a very low price compared to a regular vet visit.

Enter a few key words into the search bar on this site, you will find a ton of info.

I give pups a 5 way combination [without lepto ] shot at 6,9 and 12 weeks old. At 16 weeks I give the combination shot with the lepto fraction in it and then once a year I give a 7 way booster. The reason I don't give lepto when they are real young is because if a pup is going to have a allergic reaction it almost always will come from the lepto part of the vaccine. Here in Tn. we have to have a rabies shot once a year. When I lived in New Hampshire the rabies shot was good for 3 years.Same vaccine just different state laws.

I give all my own puppy shots except rabies, which is county mandated here.

5.5 weeks = 5-way
8 weeks = 7-way (with Corona)
12 weeks = 8-way (with Lepto)
18 - 20 weeks 7-way, and then they go to the vet for rabies. I let the vet give the yearly booster, but it's only about ten bucks more for him to do it.

I don't have that many dogs now, so i just take them all at once and they only charge me for one visit. Booster shot and heartworm check is about $55/dog plus one $15 exam charge. With heartworm prevention and regular vet visits, it costs me an average of $125 per dog/per year to maintain them. Keeps the city happy, too.

thanks for the replies, I am from nj and out here it is 75 bucks to walk thru the door at the vets office, I took my 3 hounds to the vet last year and it was around 475 for a check up and shots ,it seems a little high for me so I want to do my own to cut back on some costs

I give all shots to my dogs and save a lot of money. If your dogs are adults and have had their shots, you could give them a yearly 7 way shot, some guys don't even do that. I do give them to my dogs. The shots cost around $5.oo each at the local farm store. I have never lost a dog or pup using these shots. I also give them a rabies shot yearly.

Richard, where do you buy rabies shots? Nobody here will sell them because it's a county ordinance that requires a vet's sign-off.

Rabies shots should be given every 3 years after the initial shot is given around a year old.
It is a muscle shot..usually in the hip muscle.
You could buy rabies vaccines still about a year ago but many online stores quit sending the tags with the vaccine.

Bev, I buy them at the local Farmer's Co-op. I get the shot and there is a tag enclosed. I live in Arkansas, not sure if other states sell them to beaglers the same way.
