not being full stock, opinions and advice!
i have one full stock beagle, shes average, my bro has a couple of beagles, the female had gotten bred by a lab, she had pups a good while back, well a female from that pup bred with his full stock male, which is a very good dog along with the full stock female that got bred by the lab, which makes the pups three quarter beagle, now not to affend any one i know alot of people believe in full stock beagles only, but the momma to the pups is a believe it or not, a better rabbit dog than the full stocks beagles, she runs rabbits down and will bring them back to my brother in one piece.my question is, i decided to take two of the pups just to see how they would do, right now they are 9 or 10 weeks old, they look just like beagles, they have all the markings. again i know alot of you may be frowning right now but i have seen some good mix bred beagles make good rabbit dogs, and for me im not in to the field trials , im just a rabbit hunter that just wants good running dogs. i would like to get some opinions from you guys on how you think they might turn out ,and if i should do any thing different in training them

I have no problem at all in a mix in a beagle if it runs and acts and especially opens like a beagle should or even better." Hybred Vigor" is the term I think folks say!
Being there is Lab in these dogs, I bet the chances are increased that they will swim like crazy after a big swamp rabbit which is good. Only thing I would watch for is if they have web feet like a lab as I wouldn't think that would be too good in thick briars.
To each his own!

If your not going to trial and your the one buying the dog food, the only person the dogs have to please is yourself. There is no reason the pups couldn't make you a pair of good hunting companions. When I was a kid and just started hunting I had an Irish setter that I hunted pheasants & rabbits with. She didn't bark on track but she would run the rabbit in a circle and back to the gun. Point is I killed alot of game behind her and the rabbits didn't know if she was a beagle or a mutt.

One of the best rabbit dogs I ever hunted with was a 3/4 beagle 1/4 feist cross. Best jump dog also. I also had some beagle and walker fox hound cross dogs that were outstanding hounds on rabbit, real fast on the line, lol.

One of the fastest rabbit dawgs I have ever seen was 1/2 beagle, 1/4 lab and 1/4 bird dog. She was probably about 18 - 20". A guy had a female that was lab crossed w/ bird dog and that dog was bred by a beagle. He kept one of the pups on his farm and let it run loose. I saw that dog running rabbits on numerous occasions and it was basically sight running the rabbits it was so close behind them. I'd watch it, and it had a decent nose and would hunt hard in the thick stuff.
Many times beagle crosses don't use their mouth's correctly - often too tight mouthed, but this dog gave adequate mouth. I sat in the deer stand many times out there listening to this dog solo rabbits for hours. Funny thing was the owner had no idea what he had. He'd say yeah she's back there running rabbits again, but he had no idea this dog was just flat burning up rabbits and making it look easy.

If that dog was under 15 inches would it do good in trials!!!
deuce
3/4 beagle and 1/4 fiest mix was bred by a local man here for years and very popular. As you say, jump dogs deluxe. We can still see it in lots of dogs and he's been dead for 20 years.
Oddly enough, a 1/4 basset and 3/4 beagle is good too. You would think it would make a slow running dog, but they can fly. Faster than either their sire and dam. Just longer bodied and have loud deep mouths. You can pick them out easily after you see a few.
Another mix that was and is still popular, and one of my favorites is the small Redbone or July mixed with beagle. Most redbome mixed had the tree dog all or part black roofed mouths or the July mixed had the long hairy tail and would be bad to stay at a hole or tree if the rabbit holed up in either. That's the only thing I didn't like about them.
I hope this is encouraging to the starter of this post.

I had a Dachsun that would burn a rabbit up. When you said the word "rabbit" he would stand on his back legs looking around for good cover. Not alot of foot and not enough mouth but he was a hell of a jump dog!
