Trashbreaking

Post by purepatchshiloh »

how do you suggest a guy goes about breaking his dogs off of rats/mice? It's very hard to tell the difference between workin a hard trail of a rabbit or just running a rat but i know my female does it and i don't want my pup to pick up the same habit. any suggestions?

thanks,

Jon

I had a young dog doing this and ending up being a good jump dog. Were them mice or rats were it was real thick. She started jumping rabbits and made a fair jump dog.Wish I had more to do the same.

I had a Reggie male that was an outstanding jump dog but he would trial quail and wild turkeys and I let him go because of this because I don't want my dogs to run nothing but a rabbit but the fellow that I let have him said he loved him because of thie habit and he said he has killed quail, turkeys and pheasants over him. I let him go because when he barked you didn't know what was going to jump up but he wouldn't run a deer but some of the other young dogs started to pick up his bad habit so he had to go.

I just don't like the unreliability also, and forget about trialing if your dog pops off on mice, you'd minus out in a heartbeat. very hard to tell the difference and i dont wanna correct'em while they're on a rabbit. thanks for the help guys. time will tell.
