Breeding Question
Do the male and female have to have a "lock" in order for the female to become pregnant?

Re: Breeding Question
Almost positive.
The male does not off load like most males do. It sort of drizzles , thus the lock is necassary.
Not a vet tho so others might have a different opinion.

Re: Breeding Question
I have had on two different breedings where they did not lock up and the females only had one pup each. I would say for a good sized litter they need to lock up so there is enough seamen to reach all her eggs that she drops. Just saying what i've had happen. I 'm about to find out again because I just bred a young male and he never did get locked up on her. If she has any at all, my guess is she won't have more then one or two. I'll try to remember this post and let you know when it comes time for her to have them.Skeeter41 wrote:Do the male and female have to have a "lock" in order for the female to become pregnant?

i had the same thing as Elliot had male didnt lock but tried several times and the female had one pup.
Re: Breeding Question
No it is not necessary that they lock. According to Lewis Long, the owner of FC Rabbit Ridge New York Nick, he was injured several years ago and as a result he could not hang. He continued to produce pups when bred to selective bitches after the injury. I don't know the size of the litters but he did continue to produce pups.
I will hopefully give some more positive feed back on this subject in a couple of months. My buddy just drove about five hours to breed his bitch to a stud dog. Each time the stud mounted and penetrated he would pull loose. After the third try the stud dog owner held them in place for about five minutes. Hopefully it worked.

Re: Breeding Question
I had a male beagle named Manny, who I was letting out to pee, mount a female beagle named Monkey, who I did not want to get bred at that time, as I was letting her in. I grabbed him and pulled him off after the first thrust or two and he never tied, but I still got one pup, who I named Buddy.
It is weird that everyone seems to get just one pup. You would think that as much sperm is in a sample more eggs would be fetilized.
Manny was a good dog, but I hated him every time I had a female in heat, that I did not want bred. He would wimper and cry no matter how far apart you kept them and try anything in his power to get them.
He was just a hair under 13 inches and he impregnated a rottwieller, german shepherd cross whose back was taller than my waist. His back legs were probably 8 inches in the air and he had a really satisfied grin when I saw them. I was mad, but it was funny too.
Once he got her, I saw no reason to keep them apart and he tied in over a dozen more times. He woul chase her around and knock her over and then mount her while she was laying down. Once she stood up Manny looked like he was trying to do a hand stand. They had 15 pups that looked like overly large black and tan beagles.
