Alpine hare hunting this weekend (video)

Post by rimfirematt »

Well I wanted to get some good shots of my dog on the track. I know of a place up in the mountains where there are a few Hare. But the good thing about that place is that its fairly open and will make good videoing. The bad part is the snow. I was hoping for a crust. There was one there but it was under 8 inches of snow. The Beagle got on a few rabbits, and really made an effort but the snow was too deep for him to run them well. One weird thing was his reluctance to bark. He was clearly on trail, not 30 seconds behind the rabbit but wouldnt open up. That was kind of bizzare. Still its a pretty neat video of how hard my dog has to work up here sometimes. I recoreded it in High def. If you got the patience for the download its better to watch it that way. Here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_R9x1LV ... 907a95e440

And a couple of screen shots.

Great video Matt. I can't believe those hare are out in such open country.

Matt, you should check in over at The Hunted Hare http://norwester.proboards80.com/index.cgi?
You would fit right in :)

Beautiful country you have there Matt.
My only sugestion for you is give the hound one less porkchop at meal time, more exercise and get him a companion to run with. The partner will bring out his competitive edge thus maybe prompting him to speak on the line more. Beagles love company of other beagles... ;)
I could hear your hound whimpering on the line, just not sure or enough scent to open, he gave good cry when he had the hare at his nose tho...
Your right... you have beautiful country to film a chase, I can only imagine what it would look like to film a white hare crossing that country in early Spring w/ hounds in full cry pressing forward... :D ...wish I could be there...look forward to seeing more of your hunts...

the hare that live in that valley are one of a kind I think. Ive been in lots of mountain valleys like that one and never see signs of rabbit. But for what ever reason they are in that one. Mostly they stick in the creek bottom. The bottom pic I took higher up than where the Hare are. It was such a nice day I just kept going up. I was looking for ptarmigan up there to see how the beagle would do with those, but never found any.

Oh yeah, those bushes you see are actually the tops of trees! I bet the snow is 5-6 feet deep up there.
