Do your dogs know what a dead rabbit is?

Post by Joeyman »

Personally I want my dogs to know that the rabbit is dead. When I kill a rabbit I show them. I make them see it. That is their reward. That is how I taught my dogs. Most of the time my dogs are standing over the rabbit waiting for me to come pick it up. They do not tear it up. They just stand and wait for me to come get it. Sometimes they continue to search so I'll pick it up and show them. After I show them they stop searching. I put the rabbit in my vest and move on down. Keep in mind I've kill hundreds of rabbits in front of them. So they know the drill. Also my female daisy will dig at a hole if a wounded rabbit went in. I pulled two wounded rabbits out of trees this past weekend thanks to her. She will stand and wait give a few barks then dig and dig. I like when she does that.

What do you guys do?

I always show my dogs the dead rabbit also, if I don't they will keep looking for it. I show it to them and tell them dead rabbit and praise them and then they will go looking for another rabbit.

I always show the rabbit to my dogs. Right after every dog sees the rabbit I field dress it right there. Some of the dogs may get a little heart and liver as a reward.

ohhhh

around here its a hollowed out tree stump most of the time or a brush pile. And they can't ever really crawl into the hole. Just dig at the hole and bark.

I break my dogs from working holes also. I am like wvduece about that and when the rabbit goes to a hole I want mine to check back in with me before they go off looking for another rabbit.

I make sure i show them the rabbit and so does my brother before we move on to the next one.I also think that is their treat and it makes them all fired up.
I don't like my dogs to stay at a hole and bark either when they hole one they just shut up and come back in and find me and away we go.

They get shown the rabbit if we get it. This ends the chase. The one dog will back track searching if we pick the rabbit up before he knows its dead, which is bad thing. Like WVduece, we have old mines and mountain breaks here in PA so we don't let the dogs dig or go in holes.

I let my dogs track up to the dead rabbit. Then I pick it up and we go on to the next one. Now if I end up wounding one and it goes in the brush and dies or the dogs run it down then my male Copper or female Katie will retrieve it for me.

My big male, Chief ,absolutely loves a rabbit he runs with pure desire like a cheetah chasing a gazelle . When he gets to one and he does catch a few a year mostly wounded or one that makes the mistake of sitting to long he will eat it in a heartbeat. I thought about breaking him from it but I like that kind of desire and I really dont shoot that many rabbits over him every year anyway. If I do I just make sure I get to it first then I let him see it. His favorite trick when I show him one after shooting it is to jump and snatch the head off then it is crunch crunch crunch.

I also show my dogs the rabbit, I have one that will inhale it if i don`t get to it before he does. I let them taste the blood, makes them want it more.

My dog recovered a rabbit earlier this year that hopped on out of sight after the shot. I was sure I'd missed the rabbit but found out later I caught him with a couple bbs. So now he thinks he has to find exactly where the rabbit is in case I didn't do my job. He's started to bring the rabbit back to me as well; the tricky part is getting him to let go of them. :)
