Steve, Yesterday was a nice day. Good running , I loaded the old dogs and let the young dogs have some fun. While at the truck loading the old dogs------- left my coat there. Spring is on its way. Fellow was here from Idaho and said he had two foot of snow and doing every thing on snowshoes

Hope your right Jack, but this morning my thermometer says -9.
Looks like the hounds will want their morning coffee again to warm up on...Patch

Saturday was 10 below again and the last snow fell over a week ago. No moisture at all in the snow. Took a 12 year old and a 10 year old out. There were a couple of teenage moose in the area and they fouled the area up a little. Found their beds and they stayed in the thicket but the dogs never bothered them. The older bitch got a start almost immediately but progress was slow. Ordinarily a good hound will use their eyes to locate tracks but the snow had been on the ground so long and there were so many hare in this spot that it was tough on the hounds. The snow was just dry powder- you could stick your hand in it and when you pulled your hand out it was still dry. A light wind was blowing but occasionally it gusted to 25 or so. There were enough hare that both dogs had one going all the time and neither wanted to hark to the other. They made progress most of the time but the run was slow and it was very hard to guess which way the hare was going. If we'd had a few guys in the woods we'd have shot a few, but I was alone and the dogs never really made the hare run and bust cover. We called it quits after a few hours. Sunday started with the same tough running but by 11 AM it had warmed into the 20's and the running picked up noticeably. By mid afternoon it was pretty darned good, but because we can't hunt on Sundays here it was just an opportunity to watch the hounds. Better days are coming!
