The worst luck--UPDATE SHE'S HOME!!!!!!!

Post by padeerhunter »

We have the worst luck with beagles! Our (my sons) first beagle was hit by a car. Then we got him another one. He took her out on Thursday night just to go for a walk and she took off on a deer, never did this before, we have a tritronics but he didn't put it on. He came back and got me and we heard her chasing way up in the woods and it sounded like she was running as fast as she could and barking the whole time. She went out of hearing distant to us. We had a little snow and tried to track her but lost her track. We tried that night for about three hours and my wife drove the roads for about the same time. I looked on Friday for about 5 hours and the same today, my wife put out fliers in peoples mailboxes also. I don't think she's coming back. She stayed in the house and it has got down to 15 degrees the last two nights, I don't think she can handle those temps. She was only 8 months old. This SUCKS! She was doing great. And she was such a part of our family. My boy says he doesn't want another, can't stand to go though this for a third time. Don't blame him, everyone is so depressed here. I just love beagles, but our luck with them is terrible. Thanks for listening.

You arent alone, Just this morning I went out and found my male basset dead in the kennel. I recently seperated him from some females that came into season and he tried to dig out. Apparently he got his collar stuck on the bottom of the kennel and choked himself out. I have never had this happen before.

But like your case, Four years ago I lost a beagle that took off on a deer. After a couple days i figured he was gone. Exactly a week later I got a call from a woman that found him (still running a deer). I got him back and he was just wore out and skinny. I got him back to health and tried to break him from the deer with no luck. I ended up selling him to a fella in VA as a deer dog. You just never know, hang in there.

I have lost my beagles on deer a few times too. Try calling the animal shelter in your county. This has worked for me. Your dog will probably show up at someones house soon. I wrote my phone # on my dog's white flea collar in permanent black ink and that has helped a few times also. I know that doesn't help right now but hopefully you will get her back soon. Also I have put down my T shirt with some food where the deer chase started and found my dog on it about midnight that night. I guess after he got tired he backtracked to my shirt. Good luck, I know how it feels. :(

Thanks for the encouragement. We did call the animal shelter and might even put an ad in the paper. We have been telling everyone we see and like I said, my wife made up flyers. Sure hope she comes back...I would love to post that she did!

Put fliers up all around, make sure you say she's a puppy on them, don't mention deer. There are gonna be ALOT of bear hunters at camps and in the woods around you. Keep your hopes up, I have had dogs out for a long time in bad weather, they are tougher than you think.

FASTTRACK IS RIGHT, SHE CAN HANDLE THOSE TEMPS, THEY ARE TOUGH, DID YOU HAVE ANY KIND OF NAME TAG ON THE COLLAR? THAT HAS BEEN A LIFE SAVER FOR ME. MOST PEOPLE WILL RETURN A DOG TO THIER OWNER IF THEY KNOW WHO TO CALL? THE PUP WILL END UP SHOWING UP AT SOMEONES HOUSE IN A COUPLE DAYS TIRED AND HUNGRY.
IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE ANY NAME TAG ON THE PUP, YOUR DOING THE ONLY THING YOU CAN SPREAD THE WORD, AND HOPE FOR THE BEST.
I'll keep My GOD, MY Freedom, My Guns, and My Money! You can keep the "CHANGE".

SHE'S HOME!!! Some bear hunters found her this evening! One of the guys said he had a flyer with a beagle on it and knew who it belonged to. She was about 5-6 miles from our house! Were all so happy, my wife hugged to guys that brought her home. She sure is skinny looking. Thanks to all who gave us hope! Now to break her of thid deer chasing!! So glad it turned out this way :D

Dude,

Glad you got your dog back. I think it might be time for an E-collar lesson. I know it's hard, but, you need to light her up on leval 6. It's better than wondering if she will make it home. I learned this lesson the hard way.
