How many years??

Post by Schag »

How many years have you owned hounds?

Personally, I have owned them for 22 years. I bought my first beagle pup for $35 dollars when I was ten years old. Old Ruffy was his name, and I ran him almost every day after school (or after practice). We had a fifty acre field behind the house. I am not sure who really owned it, but no one ever said anything to me. If someone would see me they would just ask if I was chasing those bunnies, and I would always say "yes sir, yes m'am". Since then I have always had beagles. I just can't go without them. I have seen many come in go in those years for one reason or another, but I will probably die one day with a beagle in the backyard. Hope all is well to everyone.

I guess I've been around hounds one way or another since I was in diapers. My grandpaw on my mom's side owned foxhounds and some of my dads family were coonhunters. My dad bought my first pair of beagles when I was about 3. Their names were Tom and Jerry, I named them after the cartoon characters  Jerry got ran over and I can't remember what happened to Tom exactly lol...I got my first hunting beagle when I was 7 and have been hooked ever since. I've owned at least one or two since then, now I got about 7 or 8. Seems like when life knocks me down, I can take 3 or 4 dogs out and all my troubles are gone. Good topic Jason!

50 yrs. I have been hunting since I was 8 yrs. old. I owned my 1st fox hound at 8 yrs. old loved it. I got my 1st beagle when I was about 25. I quit fox hunting at that time because of the deer problem. I have owned many beagles since that time. I had some of all colors and blood lines, some good some not so good, but I have loved it all my life.

I grew up around beagles & treeing walkers. My grandpa was into hounds big time. We had all grade beagles when I was a kid. Some of them were real tall 16”-17” for hunting snowshoe hare. My two favorite dogs from my childhood was a small black & tan male named Shorty I got around 1972 when I was about 6 and an open marked female I had in high school named Ginger.
I didn’t have any beagles for about 15 years after I got married. Then 8 years ago I bought one & got hooked all over again.

49 years here. I got my first when I was 10 years old, loved that little red bitch, been hooked ever since and don't even wany to try to count how many I have had since then. I have 6 now. My grandfather was a fox hunter so my mother told me it was in my blood. When I get stressed out from a days work I just take them and let them run and before you know it the stress is gone.

Dad and Grandpaw kept them as long as I can remember. I've owned them 32 years. Got the first one free and she was a good one,I went stupid after that and started buying them.

Boy, does this bring back some priceless memories. I loved running around the woods with my grandpa and his hunting buddies when I was a kid. My parents never worried because I was with grandpa. If they only knew. Whether we were after coon, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, fox or deer it was always a good time.

My grandpa always whistled while he was rabbit hunting. I could always hear where he was. His favorite song to whistle was “Your cheatin’ heart”. I learned all about Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Ernest Tubbs. And how those guys were “real singers”. He taught me to play guitar to their old songs.

Gramps smoked King Edward cigars and so did I when I could steal one of his. I made sure he had one in his shirt pocket before we buried him. He always had a bottle of Kesler’s whiskey behind the seat of the truck which explains why whenever grandpa’s whistling stopped the old guys were probably back at the truck.

This was the same man that no matter how late we were out chasing coon on Saturday night would be at my house Sunday morning to take me to church. I learned a lot about hounds, God, farming, loving and life from him. I often think of grandpa and the times we shared hunting and running hounds. I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything. Every kid should be so lucky.

My oldest hound just turned 7. I got him free when he was just a pup and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! When he was about one, the family and I decided he needed a companion so, we got another one. Then somebody told us what a field trial was, and, well, you know the story from there-- now there are 10 wonderful hounds at home!

Since the late 50's. Had Beagles around all just about all my life. Dad hunted long before I was Born. Started going hunting about 8 years old. Quit about 5 years when my hunting buddy got killed in the early 80's. My youngest son got me started back into beagles. Now it is a familey kennel with me my son and daughter-in-law. Never could get my wife intrested.
