2008 Indiana Youth Rabbit Hunt...

Post by Keystone Kid »

Hoosier Beaglers,

Gentleman we currently have approximately 15 youth signed up for the November 8, 2008 Youth Rabbit Hunt on Salamonie Reservoir. We’re going to try our best to accommodate 50 youth this season at the Salamonie Hunt.

We really need you for this event. I would like to have 15 packs/groups of dogs for the youth to hunt over. We currently only have six dog handlers that have committed to this event, so we need six to nine more. The past three youth hunts have been very rewarding for “everyone” involved. I think the mentors & dog handlers enjoyed their selves every bit as much as the youth. It’s a really rewarding feeling to watch a child hunt over his first pack of beagles. To me “it’s priceless”! I guess that’s why I try so hard to promote this event.

I would appreciate it if you would read the information at the links bellow and pass the word around that we need more dog handlers for the event.

Its sad, but it seems like its like "pulling teeth" to get Beaglers to help with this event in Indiana. Off & on for the last 6-months I have contacted many beagle club members by email, and over 100 Hoosier Beaglers by email and only 6 have committed to handle and provide a pack of dogs for this event.

I’m rapidly starting to loose respect for the largest majority of Hoosier Beaglers! It’s only one-day guys & gals.

So far on this board alone 19 Beaglers have viewed this post. Not even counting my past posts on this subject.

I guess I'm one of those Hoosier beaglers you're losing respect for since I talked to you this morning and told you I had previous commitments. I am a wedding photographer and my weekends get booked up about a year in advance. By the way, I have 4 children of my own that I take hunting, running dogs and used to take them to trials.

Rabbitearl, I trialed quite a bit for a few years, I don't trial much anymore so I guess the points aren't much of a factor for me.

If the strategy to get more beaglers to help out with this event is to insult them until they give in and help, then you are implementing your strategy very well. Let me ask you, how's that strategy working for you?

I have taken off work & closed my business down the last three years for the Youth Rabbit Hunts in Indiana. This year, I most likely will be paying a large portion of the total cost for the food for after the youth hunt. I have many more insults left. My theory is "hit them were it counts". Right in the pocketbook.

Here are the AKC Beagle Club that are represented in the youth hunts:

I can only speak for mostly AKC Beagle Clubs, because I’m not personally affiliated with any other registries.

There are 5 clubs north of Indianapolis in Indiana. They and their participation numbers are listed bellow.

2007 Indiana Youth Rabbit Hunt

Elkhart County Beagle Club in Northern Indiana-maybe 3 members helped out

Albion Beagle Club in North Central Indiana also a UKC Club-7 to 8 members helped out

Western Beagle Club in North Central Indiana-NO members helped out

Prairie Creek Beagle Club North central Indiana-5 members helped out

Grand Lake Beagle Club North central Indiana-NO members helped out

2008 Indiana Youth Rabbit Hunt

Elkhart County Beagle Club in Northern Indiana-NONE so far

Albion Beagle Club in North Central Indiana also a UKC Club-2 so far

Western Beagle Club in North Central Indiana-NONE so far

Prairie Creek Beagle Club North central Indiana-3 so far

Grand Lake Beagle Club North central Indiana-NONE so far

By the way, I myself do not have a child in this event. My one and only son is in Phoenix Arizona playing football for ASU (Arizona State University), and he is over the age limit anyway.

Have you ever stopped to think it may not be that they don't want to help with your particular youth hunt due to the person asking having a bad attitude? If I'm not getting something accomplished then I usually look inward to see what I'm doing and if there are things I could do differently. Rarely if I'm not successful at something is it someone elses fault, it's almost always my own shortcomings.

I had been prepared to help last year if you will remember and there was a mix up (on my part) about the dates. I could not help this year but had in mind to help next year and to call some people for this year to see if I could help out by getting some hounds and helpers up to your event. Due to YOUR attitude I will probably try to help with other youth hunts instead.

Youth hunts are suppose to be focused on the kids and not someones hurt ego.

I hope the kids have a great time, I just think you need to adjust your attitude and seek positive ways to help them do that.

The CIBC has there monthly meeting the last Wednesday of every month.

maddogkennel,
It’s a nice thought, but it is really way to far from KY. It should be the responsibility of Hoosier Beaglers. Bellow is the hunt location if you want to make the drive:

DaManBeagles,
I don’t know where Coatsville Indiana is. If its anywhere near Terre Haute it’s way to far and I don’t have anymore extra time. Someone on here should relay this event to them.

Well, I was going to ask about this hunt and how I can help but darn...it seems like this is a p#ssing match. I would have been able to bring 3 dogs. I was just going to need a little more information about the hunt. I don't know tho. Having threats of raising prices and putting down Hoosier beaglers. Doesn't really make new Hoosier beaglers want to get involved in anything like this.

Monte,
I didn't count you as a Grand Lake Member. I put you down as a Prairie Creek Member since you said you were more active in the Prairie Creek Club. Your wife and fathers help was very much appreciated!

As for it being unorganized, last year was the first youth hunt at Salamonie Res. It takes a few years to get things organized. I need feed back from everyone. Since I don't get much of that it is hard to know which way to move for the following year.
