I have read alot of your posts.

Just woondering if you have ever seen a dog with enough noise to suite you?

I know you are crossing differant dogs and such to get more noise so I'm assuming you have seen or had a dog that impressed you? If so what was his breeding?

Just a freindly question,

Rob
rob ive seen some dogs that impressed me with their nose..i guess ive never seen a dog i was satisfied with.. although it doesnt mean a dog isnt real good - i bought a dog one time the owner had died. he ended up with some friends and this dog ran loose a couple years. he ran deer and fox and hare around my house. i think hes best ive seen but never got his papers. he was a 15 in akc beagle..took me a whole year to buy him i gave the huge sum of 150$ they didnt want to sell but couldnt afford to keep him for that kind of money.. (this was theire exact words) if u could see a rabbit track he would run. ive seen better on crust.. he was great on bare ground also. i had some pups off him. some were better than him on crust. these dogs were just average on bare ground. i dont think any were quite as good as dad on snow but close.. slower dogs.. and females all were under 13 inch.. if i had a brain i would have bred a lot more.. cause these were most consistant beagles that were good on snow that ive seen.. everybody knows of some great dogs that are dead now, these are kind of same category as that.. the pups were very steady dog.. sometimes run long time with no losses... they had gears . could be fast , they seemed to match speed to conditions better than any ive seen. i still have grand pups of this dog. its watered down. crossed up mess. ive tried breeding a few times trying to revive but didnt get pups .. ive moved on.. trying lots of dogs.. i may never see a dog im satisfied with but that doesnt mean i dont think alot of some ive seen. . right now ive got a couple dogs i think are excellent. but the rotten pukes couldnt run last sunday on crust and 25 degrees. at 20 below and semi fresh snow they are right up there with best ive seen.. rob ive seen guys keep beagles that never could run below 20 degrees. they cant run good as often as they can run good.. these dogs i have no use for... some of them are superstars in good weather, idont want this type of dog and i dont care if hes world ch... show and field. if u lumped together all beagles ive seen this is average... i feel like the average beagle doesnt have nose enuff to be valuable to hunt here.. ill give u a list of names of guys running in same conditions and they ll tell u this is true.. so if i sound down on beagles this is why.and very few crossbreed hounds have the nose ive seen in the best beagles ive seen. just better than an average one.. . im not anti beagle ijust need more nose. pete

That about sums it up. Don't care how good a dog's best 10 days are, but I care a lot how poor his worst 10 days are. Seems like it's the opposite with a lot of folks: most don't care about the bad days; only how good the dog does when he finally gets 'his' conditions to run on. Doesn't take much of a dog to keep a rabbit moving when scenting is average or above anyhow.

Robbie, I'll call you about the Can-Am. If we can get some prominant guys on board like your father, Mike White, anyone else you can think of; I think we could put this together.

Steve,
I'll make a list of guys from around here and Canada and see if we can't put something together. I have a few ideas for the trial.

Snowshoehairguide,

Thanks for the reply.

I tottally understand where you are comming from.

I don't have to run in the conditions you do as afton as you do.

But Days like saturday (4 degrees) really show you what you have or don't have.

I wish we could hook up and run some day. To bad your so far away.

I think I have one that by himself (with nothing else messing up the tracks) could do it just about anywhere.

I would like for you to see him run solo.

I'm like you the titles mean nothing to me.

Thanks again and if you ever find the ONE please let me know.

Rob

How COLD is It?

Post by Ed Brown »

It ahas been in the -20 to -10 degrees here for a few days. Yesterday it got up to +14 degrees. I have no idea what my dogs would do at - 10 degrees and colder because I'm going to be INSIDE. Going to worse tomorrow and the next few days. They say we'll have record breaking temps coming this week.
There was a post about not having heat for the dogs in this cold climate. I've never heard of heated kennels. Straw and no drafts will be all the beagles need.

I ran today at 4 degrees with a wind chill of about -15, my dogs for whatever reason run better when it is really cold (+10 degrees to -10) then they do when it is +25 or so. I had a 2 year old bitch and a 4 year old male out today and I could not have asked more from dogs then what I got. When it is +25 to about + 35 (on snow) they leave something to be desired. I really don't know why. Hare

Twenty below with 30 to 40 mph wind this morning. BRUTAL! Had 3 inches of fresh snow last night but this wind will keep me inside for the next couple of days.

Jon, I have an outstanding bitch off Ranger Dan and a Mr T bitch that I plan to breed next spring. She's not for sale but any pups that appear likely to exceed 13" will be sold. I have several spoke for now but they want 13's as well. She will be bred to FTC Berpaul's Mac who is producing some very good snow hounds (see Cowbay Striker) and has been my "Go-To" hound when hunting this winter. I also have another 13" bitch off Ranger Dan and IFC Cool Running Sonic that I may breed, but I have not yet decided if she's worthy of breeding. Lots of talent but sometimes has some extra mouth and hasn't quite put it all together yet. She too will be bred to Mac if she comes around. Mac has excellent nose, is naturally trash proof, uses his mouth perfectly and stays on a check til he grabs it, then leaves the pack behind. He's getting old (10) and arthritic in the hips and lost a few steps but still is impressive.
