The dosage mentioned above is correct. A follow up dose should be administered 3 weeks after the initial dose to clear up any tapeworm problem.
The rumor that it should be given for three days in a row is false.
You might want to check out the new Equimax brand wormer. It gets rid of everything including heart and tapeworms. After switching over to equimax I would not give anything else to my dogs.

I wouldn't use valbazen at all. Safeguard is fenbendazole ( I think that's right) and is a different medicine than valbazen. I remember a few years back there was a prominent U.P. beagler that posted killing a field champion with valbazen. I don't remember all the details, but I do remember a few other people reporting problems. I'm not trying to stir the pot, but forewarned is forearmed. Best wishes Bob
It says on the bottle to give .75 per 25lbs. That might be why people are having problems. If they thought they were giving 2 cc to a 20 lb beagle they are actually dosing 65lb worth of animal & not many beagles weigh that much & if given 3 days in a row the beagle is getting 195 lbs worth of wormer in a short period. I have used .75 cc per adult beagle 3 days in a row & then in 3 weeks give another round. I repeat this regimant every 3 mos & stay pretty worm free as far as stomach & intestinal worms.

Plow: The dosage can NOT be computed on weight! Those dosages on the bottle are for cattle (whose digestion and metabolism are COMPLETELY different). It is not uncommon for the effective dog dosage to be MUCH higher per pound as it passes through his digestive system much faster with less absorbtion. The CORRECT dosage? That is the tough part as most VETS will not touch that one for obvious reasons. That leaves us with trial and error which can be fatal or advise that is often based only on hearsay or limited experience. As Bob just pointed out there can be long term risks too. All of the uncertainity pushed me to Interceptor. It is broad-spectrum, labeled for dogs, and the dosage is backed up by research and testing. I still do it "outlaw" (23 mg tablet cut into four pieces) to save money but I THINK I am "doing right" without costing me an arm and a leg. At under $1.25 per dog monthly, I still think it is a good buy. Plus, I rarely have to give anything else (except for an occasional Droncit for tape). Good luck to all of you!
Funny, I've got a Pop Fannie bitch that's been on it since 92', don't remember when George put the artical in the Rabbit Hunter Mag. but thats when I started using Valbazen. We also have carried pups through coccidia by using it at 1/2 cc per day for 10 days. From what you all say, it's time for some of these old dogs to die...lol
ps. we only use Valbazen in the Winter, the hounds are on Ivomec during the skeeter time of year.

I am glad it has worked out for you Patch! The one bottle I used did not kill my dogs nor give then any problems that I could link to it. However, I heard stories about "a friend of a friend" and it scared me even though it was probably mostly heresay in most cases. I have been the same way with Ivomec - I used it for years without a problem. I still have a bottle and will use it in a minute for a specific problem but I got scared on that one too due to some negative press from some very knowledgeable folks - folks much smarter than me for sure! Thanks for all the good advice and tips you share with us Patch!
Hi Chuck,
Everyone should do what they feel is best for their hounds. Buy the best you can and give them the best.
Thers's a old fellow over in the UK that dust his hounds with sulphur at feeding time and has a brine bath they walk through, when going back into the kennel from hunting. Between he and his father, they've been doing it this way for over 100 years. He says it adds flavour when they clean themselves...lol
All the best...Patch

It has been shown by research in the general population that people who eat Frosted Flakes have a lower rate of cancer than people that eat Shredded Wheat. There is definite scientific proof of this fact. Does that mean if I eat frosted Flakes I will have a lower risk for cancer? The answer would have to be no. In fact my risk of cancer would go up if and when I start eating frosted Flakes. Why? Because as I get older, mine and everyones risk for cancer goes up. People that eat Shredded Wheat have a higher risk of cancer because old people eat Shredded Wheat and old people have a hgher risk of cancer. Young people eat Frosted Flakes and young people have a lower risk of cancer. Easy to make false correlations when stating facts. Easy to draw the wrong conclusion when only given limited information. Much harder to know when you don't have enough information to draw a correct conclusion or make a correct correlation between 2 facts. I agree with Patch in that to each his own.
Everone should do what they think is good for thier hounds in my opion.
But it's funny how many different ideals or opions you here but we all
know that old saying opions are like a$$holes everone has one.
Well about 15 years ago my vet whom I use mostley for large animals
and I talked about Ivomec and he said it would not harm dogs except
for the collie breed and his feelings were it could do more for my hounds
than he could.I have used it ever since on beagles and Blue Heelers
and I've not had any ill effects. When Valbasin came out he basicly told me the samething.I use Ivomec thru the summer and Valbasin in winter
and ever 3 mths I retreat 10 days from 1st treatment.I'm very pleased
with this mythod most all my dogs are on concrete and very seldom
do I see worms + I thing the Ivomec helps on fleas and ticks.
Just my opion.
