Gun dogs vs. Trial dogs

I have one of those Dogs here now!! A lot of Guys Wont run with him Say he is a babbler and a coldtrailer mouthy BUT come huntin Season they all ask if I am Gonna bring him!!!
Dont matter if its -10 or 90 and blowin Dust he gets it Done.he will open early but just give him a few min and he will have it up and Runnin med fast on Good days and will get down and Crawl on the rough days.When he barks YOU KNOW the rabbits there...
Most all the other hounds in the pack will hark to him When he barks and as soon as its Hot enough For em to Run, Off they Go..i have seen other Dogs Walk over a track that he picks up and goes on till the jump
Trial Dog??? Nope he has got minused out in most all the trials he has been in. (UKC) or just Dont come back for not gettin enough Done (AKC) happy as heck to sit in the middle of the pack Till they come to that Hard Check then he Shines again..
Do I wish i had more like him? Not always! but he aint goin no where either!!!
All our Dogs are Gun Dogs First. Show or trial Dogs Second We HUNT! TRIAL! and SHOW most all our Hounds...
A Beagle is a Beagle And there should not be a Difference or Separation be it trail Gun Or Show they should be able to Do it all .

I keep reading this same post every other week, on every forum. I have never trialed a dog but am going to my first one on Sept. 6. It is not in a enclosure, it is on state hunting ground. I know several of the people that are in charge of the trial and all of them hunt over the same dogs that are in the trial. I am going to experience it myself first hand becouse it sounds fun and sounds like there is lots of fellowship with other Beaglers. I must say some of these threads get down right heated over this issue, personnaly who cares if you dont like one or the other, it doesnt make it wrong, its all about what you enjoy. The other thing that comes to mind when I follow these post reminds me of something at work when we talk about certifications (Fire Service) the people that hate certifications and any kind of education the most, are always those that dont have it and cant get it! I kind of feel like some of that hold true in these post, those that cant trial or who have never done it hate it the most and are the most close minded. Man, what ever side of the fence you are on try the other before you make a judgment, and as far as dogs go they are either great dogs or they are not, reguardless if they trial or hunt. The activety itself does not make a great dog! Not to offend, but it seems simple to me, the old saying applies to both sides here, "put up, or shut up" if you are that set against hunting or trialing try the other befor you have a definate opinion.

mybeagles i enjoyed reading ur post ,,i can tell by the way you put that you really like that dog ,,,but if a dog barked 150 yards before it got the rabbit up ,, that dog is just not for me ,, hey if he suits you and you like that and he produces most the time for you in doing that congrats you found ur hound ...i just cant handle it. i very muxch enjoy hearing mine open but when they do and i guess its because i trial if they cant run it in 1-3 minutes at worst they aint gona have a long life here somebody else can enjoy them. does that make them evil NO.. jUST NOT MY KINDA DOG.. god bless!

I have a female here that a guy wanted to sell because she popped off a little too much for his taste...she is Shoreacres bred and is absolutely the BEST jumpdog and running hound I have ever owned or seen...I agree with not letting those that simply babble stay around, they wont make it here at all, but one that will truly coldtrail and get the job done is just fine by me. She does place in trials, but I am a hunter 95% of the time so her legacy is in the field, not in the trophy room. By the way, this guy asks me to sell her back every time I see him. The answer is always the same though... NO!!!!

I don`t do either anymore. I just run dogs. I run dogs at night in the winter when its hunting season. Why kill the rabbit when all it does is end a good race.Its hard enough to find rabbits to run. The best dogs in my kennel have never had a gun shot around them. I think it does more harm then good hunting rabbits over your dogs.

I Do A lot of Running just to hear the hounds Also And I NEVER shoot the Rabbit on the First Circle usually If i shoot at all its on the second or even third Circle...You just cannot tell how Good your Dogs actually are until that Rabbit is Tired and is Pulling every Trick it has to Shake the hounds..
And have you EVER seen how Fired up a Good hound Gets When it gets a little taste of WHAT IT HAS BEEN PURSUING????
I Always make sure I shoot a couple for the young Dogs just to get em Fired up and learn WHY they are Chasing that Bunnie!!!

The gun dog and the trial dog should be nothing but the same. I went to an AKC SPO Mid-West hunt last fall at North Central Ohio Beagle Club. There was a guy named Mcguire that entered his 2 15" males that he claimed were his best two gundogs. This trial was in his neck of the woods and he just wanted to try it. I think it was his first trial ever. There were 49 big males and the conditions were real tough. Remember how dry it was last year? I think the temperature hit above 80 degrees that day as well.

His dogs finished first and second. That tells me we're doing something right if that is the end result. Trial dog, gun dog, they should be the same JMO.

Right now I gun hunt only but I am trying to get some that are worthy of doing both. To me a good dog should be able to win or place in a trial one day and then have rabbits killed over it the next day. JMO

Lololol, field trial dogs are gundogs that have been taken to trials. For every 1 gun dog that is trialed there are about 100 that are not. If a person thinks that the best gundogs are at the field trials, they live in a box. There are thousands of rabbit hunters and thousands of beagles that don’t enter trials. Pick the top 10 dogs out of the 1500 that are trialed a year{on a regular basis} and then pick the top 10 dogs that are used for gun hunting only out of about 10,000 across the country in back yards everywhere and see who absolutely gets smokkkkked. You might say “that’s what the trials are for, bring them dogs on” but that’s just not their thing, but let me ask you this, how about these kennels with numerous field champions invite some of these non-trialers come and run their “just gundogs” with their FC’s. People are always welcome to “come” see their dogs run but not with a grade dog or any “non-trial” dog for that matter, that may make their FC look silly.
I would love to see a 6 hour “charity hunt” with 12 dogs involved. 2 of AKC best, 2 of ARHA best, 2 of UKC best and 6 non-trialing kennels/breeders being invited to bring their 1 best dog, voted in by a poll on this sight. Since it is for charity you could throw in a dinner and I believe people would come from everywhere just to see the results and do a good thing for charity at the same time. Oh, the only catch is; the AKC dogs must be champions, the ARHA must be Grands and the same with the UKC.

We trial the same dogs that we gun hunt. And they are gun hunted hard. Dylight til dark most of the time during rabbit season. And get a ton of rabbits shot in front of them. They also win trials, plenty of them. I have a buddy that it took me 3 years to convince to take his dogs to a trial. These dogs have had litterally at least a thousand rabbits killed to them. He has now been to 7 trials and has won 4 of them. We are only running UKC right now, but I think they would also fit well in AKC Midwest. As for the cold trailing trait( I hate it). I know there are some honest mouth cold nosed dogs out there, but 7 out of 10 times it's a babbler. There is a guy that lives down here that has 2 of the worst babbling dogs there are, and he thinks they are rabbit jumping machines. They sometimes babble around for 10 or so minutes, then eventually a dog runs into a rabbit, and there you go. They must have been trailing that rabbit the whole time. Everyone knows there are a ton of good dogs out there that don't get trialed, but that doesn't mean that they couldn't excell in the trial world. If you bring them to a UKC hunt down here they better be gun dogs, or else your wasting your time.

i would like to see that i dont trial either shoot very few rabbits maybe 2 or 3 a year in my eyes i think i got some pretty fair dogs ocasionaly i will run with some dogs that are trial dogs i dont see nothing special about them some are pretty good dogs others i wouldnt feed if they were given to me just the way i see things jb

i tried trialin twice ukc to me it was about like walkin in the county courthouse.whole lot of politickin . i have ran with champion dogs that could flat smoke a rabbit goin and a comin and i have ran with grade dogs that could flat put it on everything on the ground. run mine for fun gun hunt some have decent dogs when they want to be. not in it to make a livin just have a little fun.

I have been following this thread close. I don't know much about field trials....we took our best male(Jack) years ago to one here in northern Illinois, but he didn't do well at all ....he was a loan hunter anyway. When the man yelled taliho, they all took off but ended up going round and round a tree....Jack went out away from the tree a bit as well as another dog, and started yelling hard and took off in the woods after a rabbit with the other dog behind him....the others still going round and round .... We had to get our dog . Also some guy had 2 pups in a crate in the back of his truck I guess for sale....crawling with ticks......did I say CRAWLING with ticks? I wanted to pick them off....also the pups were in their own wastes and I mean a lot of it . The whole thing dissapointed me . Like I said, I don't know about field trials, but do know what hubby likes, and that was his best ever rabbit beagle, Jack ....oh, and hubby also likes eating rabbit .
