bradadkins wrote:well..not bashing Black Gold..but never had any luck with it...I have swore by Purina for years and in my opinion it is still top notch feed...but I can't see spending that much difference..

Seems to me like people are saying" if you feed that your dogs won't be any good" "Better feed this you will win the big one" ..stop looking for feed..look for you a dog.
I got my suspicions about all this jacked up feed anyhow..how many people are having heat cycle probs? could it be too much steroids in the meat processed to make the feed? try switching feed if you got a dog that pops off..they are too pumped up..
Not bashing anything..but I do have my suspicions..anyone else??

I dont think Diomand Poisond thier food, if I am not mistaken it was the corn they recieved from the farmer that caused the problem, then last year the rice was the problem that caused the scare with almost all the feed companies. So do think the farmers that grow the crops intentionaly poisond our dog? I truely dont think any feed company (or farmer) would poison there product. Your way of thinking I would hope you dont eat corn or feed corn to anything.

I have been feeding HI-STANDARD DOG FOOD for almost a year now, great dog food. Very low stool volume, Omega 3 and 6 and my dogs energy and stamina is excellent. It cost about $2.50 less than most major brands per 50 lb.

Beagled1 had some very good information if you guys would read it closely. The major ingredients in dog feed start with the first ingredient listed and so on. Any feed you find that the first ingredient starts with corn will msot likely cost less. Read your ingredients closely and make sure that the first ingredients listed are chicken, chicken by products, meat etc. As Beagle1 stated dogs are meat eaters. Also everyone needs to know that dogs don't burn protein. Protein can be increased by many means such as cotton seed hull but you don't want to feed your hounds such. The fat content in feeds is very important. Dogs need the carbohydrates to perform their best not protein. Protein is way over rated in feeds and the easiest thing to increase in feeds. Most of your better feed companys are offering feeds with less protein and higher fat contents. Again working dogs can burn fat but just urinate the excess protein. Thus the kidneys are over worked. Danny has a good point about feeding a good dog but a good dog can't perform at the top of his game if he is not being cared for properly. This goes back to getting out of something what you put in them.

Beagled1 wrote:Ok, this is my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth.

I don't feed Sexton's Bro, so obviously I can't give a firsthand rating ... But I did look @ the website and there IS a reason the food is so low priced. This was the ingredient list for the 27/16 feed:

Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Meat and Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Wheat, Distillers Dried Grain with Solubles, Animal Fat Preserved with BHA, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Rice Hull, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc sulfate, Vitimin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Copper Sulfate, d-Calcium Panththenate, Folic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate in Gelatin, Manganous Oxide, d-Biotin, vita-min B I2 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supple-ment, Riboflavin Supplement, Puridoxine Hydrochloide, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide and Thiamine Mononitrate.

While the feeds with the most elaborate ingredient lists aren't necessarily the best, the most basic way to determine if a feed might be quality is to look at what's inside. I'll tell you one thing. This feed is NOT 27% protein - not bioavailable protein, anyway. Dogs get plenty of use from grains but being primarily carniverous, they do need meat. Meat is the 3rd ingredient on the list and only two sources of animal based protein out of all 9 basic ingredients
Second major problem here is the BHA used to preserve the animal fat. It is as cheap as cheap can get and has been tested on lab rats & found to have carcinogenic properties (meaning it can cause cancer) and also has been known to affect the kidneys.
I'm hurting by gas prices and the high cost of everything except the air we breath as much as the next guy. I try to be as economical as possible with food for myself and the dogs but won't feed myself things that will save a few bucks but cause problems down the line. Feed is more than something that keeps the dogs alive - it should keep them healthy, too.
what do you feed?
purina ingredient is corn(filler)
poultry-by - product (by product means chicken feathers and guts, great source of protein, but not very digestible)
corn gluten meal (good source of protein, but not digestible)
meat and bone meal
soybean meal(not very digestible)
iams, eukanuba, and science diet are no better than purina ingredient.all are over price.
that why i said for the money sexton bros. is one of the best.
before i give $35 to $40 a bag for iams,eukanuba pro plan,etc.i'll buy blue,blue wilderness,natural,etc..which every ingrendent is higly digestible,but i cant afford $100 a week for dog food.

I'm sticking with Purina Dog Chow. It's the best all around feed I've used.I know the cost is ridiculus, but to me my hounds are worth it.Try joining the Pro Club.It has helped me alot with the cost.I get the 44lb.bag for 15 bucks with my rebate check. One thing I've learned about feed is you get what you pay for. Also Purina does alot for the sport of beagling,I try to support them when I can.

Also Purina does alot for the sport of beagling,I try to support them when I can.
i Also feed the Dog Chow and Like it Well i Wont be Switching any time soon.
now my question is And i have asked it before...
JUSt WHat Does purina Do For houndsman??????
Do they help pay for trophys?????
Do they help pay for advertisement on your upcomming trials???????
Do they help take entrys??
Do they help with the paperwork????
Do they pay the fees to the registrys?????
All i have ever seen them do is bring a few bags of food to a couple trials,,
but they want you to place thier banner on your Clubhouse wall!!!!
I am not trying to knock them I just want to know HOW do THEY help us??????
everybody always says they help Support us!!! that they do a lot For the Sport HOW????
Same goes for black gold or any of em!!!
I Do know that Purina pays for the food at one of the banquets every year or so I was told.
but we Also Spend millions on thier feed so it is a drop in the bucket for them to do this ONCE a Year......
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

I used to use the Science Diet but switched to Nutro and dogs stay in shape on small amounts and there's little crap to clean up. But it always seems to be sold out at the three vendors nearby; I usually pick up 2 or 3 bags (for 3 dogs) whenever I find it in stock.
