Cattle Ear Tags????

Just bought a box of tags for the dogs and man do they stink something terrible, how long with the oder last?

Anyone here have a certian kind they like better?

Jack, I got the purple ones from Chip E., they were put together so I could just slip my collars through them. I didn't notice any strong odor at all. I have had no ticks at all. I had one male that flies would eat the blood out of his ears every summer and there aren't even flies near the kennel now. I love them, and will use them every summer. Out of curiosity, what color are yours?

i got the orange ones from tractor supply and they are working great. i have not noticed any smell.

They are green... I too have doubled them over so i can just slide them onto my collars.

I was worried the odor would mess with my dog's scenting ability... I have nothing to worry about, put on on Lucy last night and won Champions @ Craigsville today... So all is well.

I'm sure the odor disapates with time, but i was sure to buy the tags with the most active ingredients.

A cow is a huge animal compared to a 20 to 30 pound beagle. How safe are these tags to use on small hounds? Has anyone read any official language about the use of these tags long term effect on small hounds? I hear they work really well but am afraid to use them until I read something that says it is safe.

I have had the purple ones from TSC on all of mine since spring with no problem what so ever. I hardly ever see a fly near my dogs. Well worth the money.

pike ridge , i was wondering the same thing! , might be a stupid question , but was wondering if they would control flies around the kennel by hanging a few from the top of the wire , has anyone ever tried this? am just curious. i live one block from the county fairgrounds and about a week after its over the flies begin to hatch and they get so bad for a week or so that you cant hardly go outside

I use the purple tags and I haven't noticed any odor from the tags and I have not been bothered with fleas, ticks or flies. Likewise I will use them every year. Flies use to bother my rottweiler every year until this year when I started using the ear tags. They would eat his ears up and he would keep them raw scratching them.

yes they work for fleas also .
i tried hanging a few around my puppy pen when they where so bad and it didn't have much of an impact .

I just bought a pack of 25 of the orange ones for 18.99 at a farm supply store ,Lee told me what I didn't use to put in a ziploc and put them in the freezer,and get them out as I needed to use them.The package says that 2 tags on one cow should work for 5 mos.They are supposed to control 2 kinds of ticks,flies and lice,I suppose they will work for fleas too.A lot cheaper than frontline and seems to be effective so far,Denny

Jack, if you still have the box check and see what the active ingredient is. I bet you got the Diazanon ones. I would recommend the Permethrin ones instead. I used the orange Patriots and liked them fairly well but the Purple Y-tex ones seem to last a bit longer. I still use the Bayer Tree and Shrub once a month during the warmer months to prevent fleas. Anytime I find an attached tick that lived long enough to feed, I change the tag. I remove the black insert use the whole in the tag to attach it to the buckle. Then I use a couple of plastic wire ties to strap the tag to the collar (one the back side of between the layers if the collar has a long tag end). This way there is less chance another dog will chew on the tag.

I may have the other, whats the major difference other then smell? I basically went with the most active ingredients and its been working. No fleas, ticks, or flies...

Even ran a dog in a trial the day after putting it on and she won. The smell wears off after a few days...

I'm basically doubling them over and with the binder that comes with them so that i can slide it onto thier collar.

Jack, I was at T & R Market where I buy my feed today and Roger said that he had gotten some orange tags once that he had to put inside zuplocks and then tie them up inside two grocery bags and still could smell them when he walked by. He has the purple ones too and opened the sealed bag and there was only the slightest smell. Lance Ratliff has been using them for years with no side effects on his hounds. I'm thinking about getting one to hang off the back belt loop on my hunting pants or chaps to see if they keep ticks away. I always get them on my back if I don't spray the deep woods stuff with high % of deet. Anyone had any luck with this since the Jack started this thread?
