Running out west on Jackrabbits

If you are interested in the jackrabbits you need to get / read Dutch Salmon's book [I think the title is "The Gazehounds".] It can be ordered from Dutch through his business, High Lonesome Books in Silver City,New Mexico. Dutch has many years of experience coursing jackrabbits with the sight hounds ie Salukis and Greyhounds.

Do jacks circle? Yes, but you better be in for a long wait if you have a fast dog, the harder you push it the farther it will range out on you. Out of hearing is commonplace running in the desert.

jacks are so fast , they come out of the bush 5 feet infront of me and before i can shoulder the gun the thing is gone. a cottontail is like a snail compared to a huge jack ! what trips me out is I'll see TONS of trails, droppings, and forms , yet can walk for days and not jump one. I think they hear me LONG before I see them and they run off to safety. I'm hopeing a beagle is going to help me find more because i know they are there , just hideing .

Well 870, if you are in the same type of environment as I was in ID, there is no rain there to decompose the droppings and they turn into little featherlite rocks. You could shoot someone with them if they had any weight to them... They just don't go away.

yeah i know the droppings don't go away and I can tell the ones that are recent or older. But the tracks and forms will be in sand . Its always windy there , shifting the sand . I see rabbit runs , and rabbit tracks all over. i mean you can't walk 10 or 20 feet without coming across a trail in some places. in 2 hours one evening i came across easily 20 forms. Yet I can walk for 6 hours kicking the brush etc and i'll be lucky to find one.

I have seen Foxhounds that could make a Jack lay his ears back. But they will quit them once the get to running Coyotes or most of them wiil. Some can put on a big show.

I have seen a lot of good beagles (line control) ruined by jack rabbits.those 10 foot leaps makes a good rabbit dog start zig and zagin looking for the next track.a steady diet of jacks will ruin a good cotton tail rabbit dog.Go grey hound.
