Whatever the name, the AKC registration # remains the same, the breeder remains the same, sire/dam, DOB & colour marking are unchanged. I can look these things up on my litter registration records to identify a hound.
As I've always understood it, it is not required that anyone buying a hound without having been permanently registered(puppy papered), that they "must use" breeders name or prefix. If the breeder wants his/her, name/prefix on hound, they must register(permanently register/adult paper) the hound.
As it remains, if I've bred a hound and permanently registered it and don't want it's name changed by new owner, I can refuse it...

If you own the puppy papers, which means breeder has signed puppy papers over to you, "you" have the right to name the puppy as you wish... "just as John sees it"

I think it's a lousy rule and is only going to amount to 2 things: More money for AKC, and more chaos for people trying to maintain or establish a bloodline. THUMBS DOWN from me on the rule. More bad than good will come from it.
ITS THE SAME AS IF SOMEONE CALLS AND TELLS YOU THEY HAVE A DOG NAMED SO AND SO, AND IT WAS BRED BY YOU.
WHY IS IT EGO TRIP? I DONT KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT YOU MUST USE MY KENNEL NAME
...and when you put YOUR kennel name on a dog you didn't breed, is it an ego trip or not? Are you wanting credit for something you didn't produce with generations worth of hard work? One generation and you can call it whatever you like anyway. THEN it becomes your breeding - your right to claim it.

I don't like it. I say you LIVE and DIE with what you breed. Both good and bad should have the breeders name on it forever, period! I like the CKC rules, breeder registers the pups when you take them.

According to the past/present AKC rules, if you own the puppy papers, "YOU" have the right to name puppy...
It has nothing to do with credit/fault, "YOU" own the hound... :hammer:
The breeder will always be listed on the papers as "THE BREEDER"
You ARE correct tho...it is more money for AKC...

I JUST BELEIVE IF I PUT HARD WORK AND HOURS AND HOURS OF FEILD WORK, AND I PAYED MY HARD EARNED MONEY I SHOULD HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO CALL IT WHATEVER. IF YOU THINK ME CHANGING A NAME IS A EGO TRIP THAN MAKING SOMEONE USE YOUR KENNEL NAME CERTAINLY IS. I DONT SEE HOW IT CAN CAUSE ANY PROBLEMS, IF THE DOG HAS BEEN BRED OR HAS PLACED IN A TRIAL IT CANT BE CHANGED.
ITS AS SIMPLE AS "WHO" OWNS THE DOG

The "ego trip" is when you take a dog you bought from an established breeder and put YOUR kennel name on it as though YOU bred it. In my opinion that is stealing what doesn't belong to you. You may own the dog but, you should respect the breeder enough to leave their kennel name on the animal.

And, Thanks everyone who does GET IT!

Nuff said by me.

Awe but here is another possibility say someone that don't have a good rep goes and takes said good rep kennel name and parks the name in first say I wanted to market a lot of pups so I go and put WINDKIST in first place that would look like they were from the Windkist kennel... Or take a plane jane dog and name it BRANKO so and so if their kennel name is not registered you can use that name. The thing with registered kennel names is you have to continue registering them every so many years if you don't and someone slips in there when your registration is up and names a dog with that name poof there goes your kennel name...

I can see two bad sides to the Changing of the dogs name.

One someone taking advantage of someone else's breedings and someone taking advantage of someones good name

I feel AKC should have a check box for breeders who do not want the name changed ever and a box for those breeders who don't care. That way, everyone is satisfied and it will prevent problems. I lean more towards not changing the dogs name once registered. Personally, I like the CKC rules on this issue.

TC, That happened for awhile with the patch name. Mike had let the AKC kennel registered name expire and folks started putting patch on anything. I started seeing hounds that had one patch hound in the pedigree 5 generations back called patch and some with no patch at all. You have to go by the listed breeder on the registration and run the pedigree back to know for sure.
You can pay AKC to "lock up" your kennel name, you can ask that buyers put your prefix on puppies names, or buyers can ask permission to use your kennel name with your signed consent, but this "lock up" is only good for AKC, not NKC or UKC. It's not cheap to lock up a name with AKC and must be renewed w/fee.
I know what windkist is saying and it's nice if people follow your wishes, but it's not the rules. I have gone through the same thing and learned, you have to "pay" to have things your way.
I have never liked having to register hounds up front. Pups die, hounds are culled for one reason or another, and I've got alot of money wraped up in dead or culled hounds that the papers get used for fire starter... :( ... How nice it would be if only those who passed the grade had to be paid for... :D

This application must be completed to effect a change to an AKC-registered dog’s name. The name of an AKCregistered
dog may be changed provided the dog was whelped in the United States. Further, in cases where the
litter owner(s) first individually registered the dog, the litter owner(s)’ written consent shall be required. A dog name
containing a Registered Kennel Name cannot be changed without the written consent of the owner(s) of that
Registered Kennel Name. However, no change in name will be recorded by the American Kennel Club after the dog
has produced or sired an AKC-registered litter or has received an award at an AKC-licensed or member event. Any
name change must comply with all AKC requirements. AKC requirements, rules and regulations may be viewed on
our Web site at http://www.akc.org. All owners of the dog must sign this application. Please return the Registration
Certificate with this application. Once submitted, this application becomes the property of the American Kennel Club.
If you are the breeder and registered the pup with your kennel name it CAN NOT be changed unless you give your permission

So true, but here is Windkists point now instead of $32+ a litter she may have spend upto $150 a litter to name the pups. Then when she sells a pup the new owner has to register the pup in their name another $20 to akc for what used to get them $32.00 + if the puppy buyer registered their pup $20 (which in most cases a pet buyer don't) - which might be the reasoning behind this new rule is to make money off the breeders since they were not getting the money from the pet buyers this way AKC is making money even if the pup don't get registered to the new owner.

I don't know to many people that when buying a dog from a certain breeder that don't keep the name on the dog, but then again it is all in respect for the breeder their hard work and your own personal ethics.

For sure it is ALL about money. If AKC didn't see dollar signs $$$$$ they would not even bother with it.

If I sell a pup with just puppy papers the buyer can name that pup whatever they want. I do not have any strings attached to any pup I sell. But, if I sell a hound that has been registered by me and I have named it then I would not want that named changed because I put alot of work into a hound that I have trained.

you know i hate to say this, but if you are so worried about akc papers you forgot what this thing is all about. i will never pay akc again,if people cant take my word on what the pups are out of they dont need one of them any way.
if i buy a pup off of you then i put my kennel name on it ,then i breed it to a dog of my choice then it would show my name becouse i picked both dods, and anybody that did their homework will see the crosses i made to see where everything came from,
but like i said i anit going to put papers on any pups anymore,
frank
