suggestions on dog food?
I once again had to go buy the hounds some food and noticed that the prices keep going up. I was hoping that some you had some suggestions on different food that doesn't cost so much and the dogs stay healthy. This is killing me.
The Crank's may not have it all together, but when we're together we have it all....

This comes up so much... Quite honestly if feeding your dogs decently is an issue, you have too many dogs. You have 3 options feed them junk, buy in bulk, and/or cut dogs down.Chaffin Crank wrote:I once again had to go buy the hounds some food and noticed that the prices keep going up. Thanks for your coments but that isn't quite what I'm looking for. Keeping the dogs fed isn't the issue....Raising the prices of dog food is the issue. Just a few months ago it was $13-$14 a bag. Now it's $20 and that is too much no matter how many dogs you have.Incahoots wrote:This comes up so much... Quite honestly if feeding your dogs decently is an issue, you have too many dogs. I was simply asking to see if anybody was trying different brands (cheaper) and how they are working.

I am a dealer of dog food . All of the products my wholeseller has are going up in price. No matter if you buy the cheep stuff or the best food on the market, The story i get is the shipping and the cost to produce the product. Thats why the dramatic price increase. Nothing is inexpensive anymore bottom line. Be prepaired to open that wallet a lot more often. They also charge me a 20 dollar surcharge per delevery for fuel.

I think that what is bad now is going to be worse! If you dont like 20.00 a bag food try on 25.00-30.00 my bet is it will be there before long. I feed a premium kibble and it is pricy right now around 30.00 a bag and I was warned at my last purchase that I could be looking at as much as 5.00 a bag more next time. I also feed ground beef that I purchase from a mink rancher at 00.28 per pound this the best thing going in my opinion. (and the cheapest) Kurt Robinson

Re: suggestions on dog food?
Yes the same thing happened to me Friday when I picked up feed. I was informed that the brand I use will be going up $4.00 a bag. All the other brands my dealer carries has been going up a dollar or two at a time for months now but the brand I use was trying to hold out till things got better and not put a increase on their feed but they can't hold off any longer. So next week they will be back about the same price as the other brands. I went ahead and picked up more than usual and it will save me a little but if you have your money tied up how much do you really save stocking up on feed.

I also am a dealer. Fuel is the biggest issue. Don't blame dog food prices. Blame the the price of a barrel of oil. What gets me is I haven't pulled up to a pump yet and find it empty. If there is a supply and demand shortage, why hasn't the pumps went dry.
Truck, tracking equipment, E collars, Kennels, and the best bred dogs that suit you, the dog food is the most important key to good health and performance.
It would be like buiding a house and not insualting it, or having to have 6 panel oak doors and putting in cheap windows. Crazy how the montly heating bill is never cheep enough, but we all like the goodies.

Chaffin,
Try Pride's Black bag 24/20. I switched to it awhile back whenever prices started going up. Seems to be working out for me.... It runs about $16-$17 a bag...
I also here Pride is going to the poly bag here soon...

I have been feeding Hi-Standard 26-18 for several months and I love the dog food. I switched from Black Gold and the Hi-Standard definitely out performs it. Kennel clean up is easy and the dogs stamina and coats look dramatically better. And the I am saving $3 per 50lb bag, Black Gold was $20.50 and I am currently paying $17.50 for the Hi-Standard.

Re: suggestions on dog food?
Thanks for the feedback, no pun intended. I may just have to look around and see what I can find. It won't be long berfore our hounds have to hunt their own dog food. May have to just start shooting deer and letting them have deer steaks every night. (Just kidding)
I realize the cost of everything is going up because of the gas, but what I don't understand is why WE let it happen. And they wonder why we are headed for a recession. It's because once you put gas in your vehicle to get to work, you don't have any money left to buy lunch, much less go out and spend money to boost the economy.
