Whipping a dog will not make it hunt. If you whip an insecure dog in the field you can save yourself the energy and time. Give it away or take it to the animal shelter because it will soon be completely worthless as a hunting dog. Been there done that.

Not saying thisis the case, but use this for a warning. I saw a rabbit champion that had been really impressive do this after a rabbit season. At his first trial of the spring in the champions, he stayed at the owner/handler's feet until a rabbit was up and quickly returned after the race or during a long check. We found out later in the day that the owner/handler had gotten a new shock collar at the beginning of rabbit season and had been using it on him for not coming back quickly enough after a race. He had used the shock collar incorrectly and ruined an otherwise good hound. Rabbit Fever, I am NOT accusing you of this, but your situation brought this to mind so I thought a word of warning is worth mentioning.

I had a friends dog act similar to this only sometimes he would come running back as if something had spooked him. We thought about yotes or something, but it was the only dog acting strange. My friend asked a wise old vet who asked him if he ever thought of the dog getting cramps. The dog don't understand the pain so it quits or runs scared. Joe payed a little more attention to this dogs nutrition and hydration and the problem went away. maybe it was just coincidence but it made a beliver out of me

You're right i'm a loser, but when i turn my dogs loose they go jump and run a rabbit. They know it's my job to stand around. I've gut stomped all my dogs for one reason or another (deer running, not handling, standing around), and they all still love me. My beagles are hunting dogs not pets! I'm ignorant, but not stupid enough to feed a cull beagle. :moon:

Is there any one of us who hasn't had trouble with a hound and it ticked you off? If so you haven't ran many hard of hearing bound and determined to get the game beagles.I have found that positive actions work well my hounds do not fear me they know that when they come to me they get pets and praise.I've had em gone all night been worried sick and then they come home ,worn out, eyes matted with weed seeds torn and tattered and I took care of them. In the field I can point and they will follow I am quiet and let them do there thing and at the end of a hunt they are in the box never do any thing more that give a stern command and I do yard work in the off season.I don't know the answer to your problem hope it gets resolved .I can tolerate ignorance in a dog but have a much harder time with a human who is mean

I bet your a treehugger. I've never whipped a dog for no reason and never will. Guys like you are the reason there are so many sorry beagles in this world. I whip my kids with a belt when they need it. I guess i'm a moron for that too. I hope we do meet. ;)

my hound's know who the boss is, some have have to be reminded twice. but they get the point. i have ben around beagles for 31 years.had to use a firm hand to break them from deer with no shock collar. barking in the kennel. or for getting there name. fighting.

i will not put up with any BS. my hounds a well mannered. they respect me and i respect them. but dont get it twisted, they know if they step out of line i will be there to correct them. it has nothing to do with fear, but training. gut stomp is a term used to correct a hound, doesnt mean thall is stomping down on there guts. u guys should watch what names u are calling some one. it could come back and bite yea.

back to the topic at hand, i will not keep a quiter, either u need to go in and watch what is going on. u have no clue why she is coming out. if it turns out she is just a quiter. then move on.

good luck!!

I'm with Bill on this. You are going to have to follow the hound and see when and why its quitting.

I had a young dog not too long ago that was doing the same thing and I wasnt sure why. After following him I saw that he was just running the track so far and quitting. It turns out that he just wasnt a hunter. It broke my heart because I had raised him from a pup, but he now lives with a 9 year old girl that just adores him. He made a much better pet than a hunter.

Good luck

rabbitfever, theres a lot of things that could cause this, my question to you is how much have you hunted this hound, remember she is still young and most hounds never really mature for a couple of years, I got a little female and in her first year in the field she was a great jump dog,8 months old, she was jumping rabbits left and right, but as soon as the older hounds would hark to her and take over the race she would come find me and start to look for another rabbit and it would not be long she would have her own rabbit up and running, now some folks would not like this to happen, but time showed me she had a dominate nature, as the season progressed if the other hounds would go into a check she would sneak back in and pick up the track. This year she is running with the other hounds and most of the time she is leading the race. The only problem I have with her is she is spoiled rotten. So is your hound and indoor hound or does she stay in the kennel with your other dogs, like some one said was she coming into her cycle, was she around strange hounds she didnt know, there can be many factors. I say if you like her give her some time, dogs have different personalties just like peole good luck with your hound.

Thall that is well said. i have some of the most well mannered hounds around. i will put them up against any lab or shepard in a obeadince contest, and my best dog has been beat the most. he will do any trick you can teach a dog.every thing from sit pretty to shut the door and open the frig. he sleeps on my pillow every night even know he is not my best rabbit dog he still is a champion and can run with anything in the country. he bit me in the face one time and you would of thought he was a tennis ball the way he was bouncing off the walls. so a good beatin is nessary when needed i cought a pup dog barking the other and i dident have a shocker on him so i chaced him down and whiped him with a tree branch if he dose it again he will get the collar and the branch. i dont have a timmid dog either they no when they have it comming and that is the olny time they are timmid. so Thall and the others that prefer the old way i am still kind of new to the sport compared to these guys but THERE METHODS DO WORK

Are the other hounds too fast for her, putting too much pressure on her?
