Re: Best Winter dog box (for a truck)?
I have a heritage sheet metal over wood. It has diamondbrite top lid over storage and slider vents on the front and sides of box. I built covers that are detachable that go over the rungs in the door to close the wind out there also on those really cold days and I love it. I also have a regal box set up identical to that one that is great also.

Stan...
Check out Seneca Kennels....they build truck boxes as well as above ground kennels
I am having them make me a custom box and I was very impressed when I went to Ron's shop to order it and go over the design layout.
Things I liked....
1. No Wood
2. Interior and Exterior walls are 1" insulated foam that are aluminum lined
3. Latches and handles are quality
4. Ron will show you their entire process from start to finish and all the materials used
5. Their price was in line for the quality of the build...yes, it is a little more expensive but I only plan on ever buying it once and should last a lifetime.
I was a little concerned about moisture getting into the custom "cubby compartment" and Ron instantly grabbed a piece of diamond tread and went to the brake and shear....in probably 10 minutes he had an example door jam assembly cut and bent showing me his plan to prevent moisture.
Make sure you tell him that you want winter covers as they are not standard but are only $10 extra.
My box should be done this week....I will send you pictures when I get it

Patriot boxes are insulated the best that I know of. They are also great in Hot weather.

I have Millcreek dog box with top storage. It is insulated and comes closable side vents and detachable sheet metal covers for the doors. Price is also very reasonable compared to other brands.

I too have ordered a seneca truckbox to be delivered next week. thanks for the good words, I was concerned about the box being good enough for winter here in upstate NY, but it seems like you have found them to be well built.
Re: Best Winter dog box (for a truck)?
I would consider a Seneca box. too; especially because of the reduced weight, but I'm also concerned about durability & warmth. I have 2 Seneca dog houses that seem to be working real well this winter, but they're new & I don't know how long they will last.

Re: Best Winter dog box (for a truck)?
Stan...I opted for the complete diamond tread because of durability and looks. I have had a box (not Seneca) that was flat aluminum lined on the outside and wood on the inside, it was fine and lasted me 10+ years, being used 3-4 times a week. I sold it to get the box you saw in my truck and it was still in pretty good shape when I sold it but I really like the diamond tread look and it prevented dents and dings that are associated with Aluminum skinned boxes. A major selling point for me was the weight difference between the "covered wood" boxes and "non-wood" boxes because I will be taking it in and out of two different trucks frequently.
Spencer....your box wouldn't have been a 3 hole with no top storage would it???....If so, I saw it when it was being built...very nice
I am waiting patiently for mine....it was a design that I have had in my head for over a year and finally bit the bullet and had it made. Hopefully my "frankenstein" is worth the wait.....

Re: Best Winter dog box (for a truck)?
I agree with Patriot boxes being insulated the best. I hunt in cold climates where a 15 deg day is a warm one and I really like the Patriot dog box I bought, the adjustable vents are great along with winter panels that fit tight. The dogs stay comfy in the Patriot no matter how cold it gets outside, as an added bonus in the summer time you pop off the winter panels and open all you vents and the dogs stay cool also. It is also great at keeping the rain out, even with all the vents open and the winter panels off the doors my box stays dry.mike crabtree wrote:Patriot boxes are insulated the best that I know of.
