Suggestions?

Post by Spoolhead1 »

Been out the last two mornings. My best dog is not hunting like she always had in the past. She normally tears the briars apart like a dozer. The last two mornings she will get a rabbit up first thing and run a half circle, quit the race and leave the other dogs running. She comes back to me and sits down beside me. When I walk she walks with me and when I stop she just sits there. She will eat a little grass and it seams to make her feel better and she will hunt again for about 5-10 minutes and then just quit again. She is eating just fine and act like she feels fine in the kennel. She is 5 or 6 years old. She has never acted like this before? I have never given her anything for heartworms. I am thinking about giving her some ivomec and maybe some canine red cell to see if this helps. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might have happened to her?

If she has Heartworms the Ivomec will kill her.

Give her some Panacur, Safeguard, or Drontal plus. Sounds like she may have Whip Worms.

Are her Gums Pink or White?

Have'nt looked at her gums. Just got done this week with a three day dose of safeguard. Why would ivomec kill her? Clog arteries?

Ivomec would kill all the heartworms at 1 time causing Heart failure.
Dad has had 2 out of a couple thousand die when he worms them with Ivomec. His Buddy Paul has lost a couple the same way. That really isnt that many, but I wouldnt chance it.

Got any ideas as to why she just quit hunting? I'm open to ideas. She has always been my jumping machine. My other two run pretty good they just have a hard time gettin em up. She has been eating grass for a while but I just thought it was because she wanted to. Now when she does it she acts like she wants to hunt again but only for a few minutes. Like I said earlier, she looks, eats and acts perfectly normal in the kennel.

I would guess the Whip worms. I would say in a couple weeks she will be back to normal. The Safeguard should have got them.

Is she bleeding a lot from her tail ?

If her gums arent nice and pink she is loosing blood. Either from Whips or the tail. If it was whips it will take 2 or 3 weeks for her to build back up.If it is her tail you will have to tape it or dock it.

Not lost much at all from the tail yet, just now starting to run more frequently. I'll look at her gums in the morning when I get home. I finished her safeguard about three days ago, should I go ahead and dose her with safeguard again you think? Her stools look normal. What about the red cell if I can get it soon?

Red cell would help build the blood, if whips were the problem. i would go through the worming again to get any eggs in 15 days.

If she doesnt straighten up you may need to go to the Vet. I would say as long as she is eating and drinking she will be fine.

I had a female get whips and act the same way. My female started looking poor and quitting after one race and just hung around me. I took her to the vet and she was positive for whips. After treating her I supplemented her food with Jack Mackeral for about two weeks. It still took a while for her to get her stamina back. I use safeguard paste every 60 days and have not had a problem since then.

Her gums are pink. Her tail has'nt even lost any hair yet. She is not showing any signs of heat yet, although one of my others is swelling a little. The one that is swelling is'nt bothered any. I don't think another has jumped on her she is older and more like a mother to the other two. I'll dose her with safeguard in another 15 days and see if that helps her any. I really would like to have her oldself back I really like her style of hunt. She hunts with me in the direction I go, not to wide. Handles extremely well, no collar needed, and knows where to look to get the rabbit up and moving. I can't hunt until next weekend, maybe she'll do better then?

Thanks to all,

I had a female do the very same thing! After I wormed her, she was right back to her old self again. Make sure you give the second dose (to kill any eggs) 10-15 days after the first--check the direction on the wormer.

Went out again Sat. Thats 1 week and still no improvement. Started on one and then quit the rest of the morning. I will give her another dose of safeguard this week to get any eggs that may have hatched. I am stumped. She is showing no signs of heat but one of my other females is, and it's not bothering her in the least. Can a brush bustin, ton of hunt dog just loose her desire to hunt? I am really stumped on this one. I hate to get rid of her but I can't feed a dog that is not going to hunt. I am going to hunt her again next weekend and if there is still no improvement she will be looking for another home soon.
