Had a friends beagle get caught in a leg hold set for fox about 7 years ago. It took him 2 days to find the dog. She did'nt whine or anything but went out at night and heard her barking. The guy said he "thought" he had permission to trap on that land but it was actualy the neighboring property he had permission on.
Most of us who have hunted and run dogs many years have lost a dog or two to traps. I've been lucky, only lost one that i know of. There's not much trapping going on around here these days except a few people trying to catch coyotes. Leg traps and snares are high octane fuel for the AR people. They can whip people into a frenzy over that kind of inhumane as they call it treatment of animals.

Sorry to disagree with you, but Michigan does not have a state wide leash law, however we all take a chance on losing our beagles every time out.chapkosbeagles wrote:the law says that the dog is sapose to be on a leash at all times out of your yard so that is a chance that all of us beaglers take

In VT any trap with a spread of 8" or more must be 5 feet off the ground or under water and snares are illegal. I guess I assumed most states had similar regulations.....
Also our trapping season ends on Dec 31. The rabbit season goes until March so most of the season it is illegal to trap.
I have heard of this happening around here but very rarely........

Traps
Very sorry to hear about your hound getting caught in the trap
, and im sure as you stated the trapper was upset as well. I use to trap alot and have caught several dogs and cats by accident, It is quite alarming to walk up to your traps in the morning and find a domistic animal captured. I released all animals without hurting them then called the owner if there was a tag. One of my friends 2years ago lost his best hound to a 330 conibear that was set illegily, they caught the guy and made him pay the owner for his hound. I just lost one of my best hounds in a similar situation but not a trap. My hound was chasing a Hare and the hare went under a log with a hole just big enuff for its head to get through, my hound went after it and got her head stuck. I found her almost dead. (suffacated ) I took her to the vets but her lungs were so badly damaged there was nothing we could do. She died shortly after. Again very sorry

Tom - sorry to hear of your loss. I'm glad you didn't turn antitrapping it's an accident that doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's truly unfortunate.
