Sounds like you had a good trip Patch. Everything you said was right on the mark.

Be careful what you with for with the crust though. The toughest running there is on snow is when it has laid around for weeks and frozen and thawed several times. When there is enough crust so the hare can cross it without leaving a mark, but the dogs constantly break through. Scenting on a cold windy day with this kind of snow is at it's worst. The dogs leave a blood trail in the snow from torn up feet. Dogs that run well in deep snow sometimes can't run at all when it gets like this. Those are the days that leave you wishing you had 2 feet of dry powder snow to run in!

Spencer, a lot depends on if you are running hare or cottontails. Cottontails hate deep powder snow and head straight for a hole in our area. If you are going to run hare, fresh snow is as good as it gets!
