Too Much Heli-Prop??? Pictures Added
Last time I posted about making a linebred cross I had some good responses. I am no spring chicken anymore, but I would like to hear what some of the more experienced beaglers had to say about this cross I made. Is there too much Heli-prop in this pedigree? What are your experiences with linebreeding heli-prop? I have my own opinions and have had some experiences with linebred prop dogs, but it never hurts to ask for more information. If you don't ask, you won't learn. The pups will be due at the end of September and I am excited. The bitch is as clean as they come with her mouth and running ability if that helps anyone out with a guess. (I realize that with any cross you never know, but I still want to hear what people think.) Good or bad comments are welcome, however, I am talking about linebreeding Heli-prop and nothing else. Thank-you in advance.

Mr. Crabtree,
She is a very nice bitch if I can brag a little. If you have seen my new rabbit hunting video she is the female with a gravel squall mouth. She is right at the top of my favorite list in 22 years of owning beagles. Thanks for the reply.

Looks like a good "linebreed".
I see 6 crosses of Jack of All Trades.
No matter how you deal your cards. Look at the parents' faults. If the parents have major faults so will the pups. Every dog has a fault.
By linebreeding....hopefully you can concentrate the good traits!
good luck with your pups, i think you made a wise cross.

Well, since you asked...
Have you ever hunted with Heli-Prop? What traits did he have that you are trying to line breed? If you can't answer those questions you are better off sticking with what you know and forget about what's on the papers. I honestly don't think Heli-Prop will have much influence on these pups judging from the papers, but if all the dogs that go back to him were selected for the same traits he had you MIGHT get some pups close to what he was.
Sounds like you have a good female. I would try to find a dog to breed her to that is as much like her as possible. Keep all the pups until you can pick out the one or two closest to her in ability. Next time breed your female to a different stud and do the same thing with the pups. Then try making a half brother/half sister cross with the best from those two litters. You may want to try breeding your female back to one of her best sons. Keep as many pups as you can and sort through them, using the very best ones to line breed and carry on for the future. If you spend lots of time and money you MIGHT get lucky and get some dogs that consistantly produce the kind of pups you like.
I'm a big believer in line breeding and even in breeding. I've used it a lot. It makes the pups a little more consistant. It isn't magic. You will still have a wide variation in how each pup from the litter turns out. It is 10 times more important to select breeding stock with the traits you are after than to worry about how the pedigree looks. OK, maybe 100 times more important.
Just my opinion from lots of trial and error. Sorry you asked?

I like the cross and hope it does well. I have a daughter out of your Zena female and Branko's Sargent Major that I will use to make the same cross. I also have a female with ninja on top and bottom that I will cross with Reggie or one of his brothers.
Good luck

Thanks for all of the replies. Tom, I guess I did not explain myself very well. I know that papers do not run a rabbit. I have had dogs directly out of some of the top stud dogs ever to step on the ground with bottom pedigree to boot that in my opinion couldn't run a rabbit to save their lives. With that being said, I just wondered what more experienced houndsmen thought about the cross. The good and the bad. To answer your question about Prop, I did not get the chance to watch him run. Had a good friend watch him run years ago at Branko's. Have seen quite a few dogs out of him run. I liked most of them. Thanks for your reply.
Bill I no longer have the Sport male. Mr. Farrell Smith owns him now.

Mr. Tom,
No need to apologize. I am glad that you replied to my post. I hope I did not come across as rude in my reply because that was not my intention nor how I felt. Anyway, thanks for the compliment on the video and thank-you for the invitation. One of these days I would love to chase those big hare.
I have my fingers crossed with the pups. Thanks again for the reply.
PS For those of you wondering about my video check out the Equipment only board and look under Briar Patch Bandits 2 See IFC Greenwell's Reggie in action. Thanks.

Well, I thought I would send a few pictures of this cross. Thank-you to all of my friends for suggestions on raising pups. I don't deal with stress too well. Anyway, thanks again everyone for your help. In 22 years of owning beagles, this is my second litter!! Too picky I guess. I hope they turn out like I think they should. They are 5 weeks old in the pictures. (There is a total of 7 puppies!)
