I can neither confirm nor deny where swinger took me... That is the part of the secret to his honey holes. I would have to blindfold greenbay so he would never be able to find it again.

Emery,
GET A JOB! Internet beaglers should run their hounds, not their jaws! (I am serious)
Who said anything negative about you coming back home and taking a few hare? The way you shoot and the quality of your hounds, is NOT going to hurt the hare population one bit!
I do not need to shoot 100 rabbits to have fun! What if every guy who owned a beagle shot 100 rabbits per year????????????????????
On the East coast they have to cancel trials because morons killed all the rabbits five years ago. (don't give me that excuse about cycles, man is a rabbit's worst predator) These same guys are now going to Maine to hunt because there are no rabbits left where they live. In approximately five more years, Maine will no longer have rabbits either.
I know a guy that shoot rabbits for fun and hangs them dead in the trees. You cannot possibly eat 100 rabbits, what do you do with them?
Joe K. (trying to save hunting for kids like Adam)

It's funny, every study that I read says just the opposite. It is the land that determines how many rabbits there will be. Where you are, there is plenty of cover and food for the rabbits/hare and that isn't about to change anytime soon. However, as a forest matures, the thick sapplings that we have a hard time walking through turn into mature trees with tops that block the sunlight out from the floor and thus kills all the cover below including the smaller trees and only the tallest survive. Once this happens, cover is gone and you have easy walking on almost bare dirt. Hence no food or cover for rabbits = no rabbits. This is why clear cuts of hardwoods grow into great rabbit spots within a couple years of the cutting. But, the same thing happens as it matures into trees instead of sapplings.
The swampy area that hare like to hang out in doesn't cycle so rapidly and usually don't tend to get much of any canopy developed because usually the only thing that grows there is tag-alder or some kind of pine. Take your pen for example, you find more hare in some locations than others just because of the cover.

You sound like one of those politics that sits down in Madison and tells the true woodsmen that the wolves are no harm to the deer population.
Open your ears, Emery! If every guy, that owned a beagle, shot 100 hare per year in Wisconsin, how long would it take to wipe them out?
SPORTSMEN DO NOT NEED TO KILL EVERY RABBIT, PERIOD. I am sure glad that everyone does not think like you. What will you tell your son, when you come back home to "NO RABBITS?" Just tell him, "The forest grew up, son."
Shoot as many rabbits as you desire in MO, but please, please, please, do not be a predator in Wisconsin.
I pray to the lord that you can understand that I am only trying to conserve something that I hope all future generations can enjoy.....

just curious?...is there a limit to the amount of hare a guy can shoot in wisc.?...secondly how can 1 fella domolish an entire population?...here in missouri we shoot our fair share of rabbits...i can also guarantee you that if i spent all the dough it took to come to wisc. to hunt hare i would kill my limit...period...now if you were to come to mo. to run rabbits and spent all the dough it took to come down here would you not want to take your limit home to eat...killing 100 rabbits per year is alil out of wack but i take my share i have 5 kids and my wife and myself it takes at least my limit of six for a meal...on the other hand nice pictures i plan on trying to make a trip up to hunt hare this year sometime...i hope my trip is as fun as you guys...

I am not saying that I take 100 rabbits out of one spot per year, I usually only take 10-15 tops in a year. That includes my trip to Wis.
I am just stirring your pot since you posted about going to VA because of his thread that he posted last year coming to Wis and shooting some hare in an unidentified spot. That originally got your goat and you were retaliating.
Good rabbit habitat management is the key. If you have a couple hundred acres that you provided good cover, good food and maintained it that way, you would be able to sustain heavy hunting and still have good stock left over for next year.
I am by far a die hard liberal sitting down in Madison telling hunter's what they can and can't do. You should know me better than that. I also know that one guy from VA, even if he brings a van full of people with him each year can't hunt the hare population dry, which is what you were talking about in the first place.

You just don't get it, do you? I used the East coast as an example. They have logging opperations going on, the habitate is suited for an abundance of game. Rabbits are extremely hard to come bye in states like Mass. Too many hunters killing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get it??
As we speak, they advertise hare hunts in Maine. The guides will tell you that there is an abundance of hare in Maine. With thousand of guys going to Maine each winter, how long will it take before the have to go to Canada
to find hare? Multiple 1000 X 100. You CAN wipe out an area if you don't use your head!

A two-year intensive field study on the cottontail rabbit at the Swan Creek Wildlife Experiment Station at Allegan, Michigan, has shown the following: The winter food of the cottontails on the upland areas consists mainly of the bark and twigs of white oak, flowering dogwood, sassafras, black oak, and New Jersey tea in the order listed. As many as four litters in a single season are reared in this region by a single female, and the females apparently breed immediately after parturition. The average number of young per litter during the period of study was 5.4. Weights of cottontails have varied according to sex, pregnancy, age, season, and weather. The average weight during the hunting season is 3 lbs. 3 oz. for the females, 3 lbs. 2 oz. for the males, and about 2.5 lbs. for the immature. The most important enemies of the cottontail in the region are weasels, stray dogs, feral cats, and hawks (red-tail, broad-wing, and marsh). Experiments on the vulnerability of cottontails in an artificial burrow have shown that they are capable of escaping or defending themselves in such quarters. An ecologic relationship between the population density of cottontails and the density of the prevailing ground cover of shrubs has been demonstrated; namely, that rabbits most frequently occupy areas with a generous amount of low ground cover, and may completely avoid locations with a dense forest canopy and no ground cover.
I agree that if every hunter harvested 100 rabbits in a season there would be a problem. However, that would put every Michigan rabbit hunter over their limit by 50 rabbits. I think most hunters use a little common sense in taking game, and most of us realize that some animals should be left to re-populate hunting areas. Every hunter does have the legal right of harvesting his or her limit. It amazes me that not only do hunters have to fight anti-hunting groups, but we have to fight each other as well. I'll bet PETA really enjoys that. Sorry if this is off topic.

Do you think that will happen? C'mon Joe, get real. Heck, only a handfull of beaglers on this site will go to Wis from out of state and shoot hare.greenbay wrote:Open your ears, Emery! If every guy, that owned a beagle, shot 100 hare per year in Wisconsin, how long would it take to wipe them out?
And as for me getting a job, I have one. My sole purpose in life is to see to it that my kids grow up to be decent Christian human beings.
As for the quality of my dogs, you don't even know what I have.

Emery, I will answer your comments in chronological order:
1. Yes, it could happen. It happened in Mass, NY, Vermont, and NH. Why can't it happen here?? (I just don't understand why you or anyone else cannot comprehend this)
2. I don't want to get into your personal life, but you mentioned it.......I stated, "Get a job," because you gave me the "shot," "take a pill." Not funny in my book. Also, I did make the comment to the Hokkie, because he was bragging how many rabbits he shot in our backdoor. (he upset me last year by bragging about shooting a 100 rabbits) You intervened just to pss me off. Now, back to the job...........your brother has a 40+ hour per week job, is on the SB, coaches, and takes his two great kids to every extra curricular you can think of. I am 100% sure, his major goal is to see that his children grow up to be Christians and outstanding human beings. Why can't you have a job??? If you did, you sure would spend less time on the computer trying to cause controversy
And as far as me not knowing your dogs.....I saw your 9", one nut, Blue dog. Do I have to say anymore. (You would still have him if he wasn't killed walking after a deer!)

Why is it then that the two dogs I got from the mighty green bay kennels were worthless? Answer me that then? One only hunted when he wanted to. One day he was ok, the next he didn't hunt. The other couldn't be left alone. Seperation anxiety to the point that he would bark through no bark collars, tear up the inside of a house, break out of a wire kennel, busting off his K-9 teeth in the process....... good breeding. They both had your kennel name on them. Maybe that is why you were so willing to part with them because you knew they weren't top notch dogs. SO, get them to someone else and then tell them what worthless dogs they have.
I also choose to stay home with my kids at this point because one is not in school yet. This is a personal decision. I gave up a $40K + job a year after my second was born. And that was with an associates degree, not your 4 years bachelor. Don't tell me I can't work and support a family. Wait a minute, how many kids do you have? Oh that's right.....
Don't get into a mud slinging contest with me. I am sure you dont' need certain things brought into the open.

This is the first post arguing over a bunch of guys killing a bunch of hare that I havent read the phrase " within the scope of the law " This is my all time favorite saying from this type of post- so I thought I would beat everyone involved to the punch and throw it in! I take it as it means as long as all hare were killed legally who cares that we killed everyone that moved and post all kinds of pictures and then we swear that numbers dont mean anything its about friendship etc, etc, etc, But year after year these same friends return and kill all they can, but again it is about the friendship etc, etc, etc.
Not afraid to think outside the box or walk outside the crowd.
I do understand where Joe is coming from, I just don't agree with everything he says. There is no bag limit on hare in Wis and there is no off season. However, a lot of hare habitat is hard to access, and with gas at $3 or more, I just don't see a ton of people spending $300-$500 on gas, $55-85 on a license just to go up and shoot some bunnies. I do know that people go to Drummond Island all the time and it gets hunted hard. It still has hare, otherwise people wouldn't keep going back. And, it is isolated where you can't get other animals moving in to new territory.
I just started the take a pill to poke a little fun at Joe, but now he has gone and gotten serious on me. You know, the internet beagler. I obviously can't be a true beagler, because I don't have a job that pays money and I don't have good beagles.
OK, I will stop there and end my discussion on the matter before I won't be able to go home without Joe being really mad at me.

Emery,
The two dogs you got here were 10 weeks old when they left. All litermates are doing outstanding. Could it be the way you raised and trained them???????????? It is funny that the 8 other littermates are doing great and the two you got from the mighty Green Bay Kennels are not. (With all your degrees, you still can't figure this one out)
I will let my records speak for themselves..........Can you tell us about your accomplishments?
When you come home, bring your best. I will GIVE you a better dog than whatever you put down. I truley mean it.
You are right, when you said, "I just wanted to poke a little fun out of Joe" You started it, but are not man enough to admit you made a mistake.
