breeding young females
seems i have seen alot of breeding young females the last yr.i would never breed a female under at least 15 months old and it will be doin extremely well then if i did ...i gues some r doin it trying to make a buck or say it matures the female ..to me breeding something , shouldnt the male and female both proved something?? WHAT SAY YE??

I'm glad you have your standard, but don't cut others for what you know nothing about.
I'd rather chance breeding a young bitch, rather than a young dog hound any day. Raising a litter of pups will settle and mature a bitch, breeding a young dog hound will sometimes make him a humping idiot.
I think we settled Bossman was breeding a 9 months old, was that for a buck also?
You hear lots of odd things on beagle boards,... some trying to get rid of pups and hounds, only to announce they've a planned litter on the bitches next heat cycle. I always thought it was funny, cutting back/while having more puppies...
Most people complain when they can't sell their own pups or, someone else is selling pups and they have none...
Most stick to the second heat theory, and most either like the hounds their breeding so well, or were so impressed by the parents that they hope for more like them from the offspring.
It's best not to get too excited, some may strike gold, while others only produce pyrites...

I'd say we'll find out for sure the next time Patch gets online , which may be a week or morebill (flint river ) wrote:S.R.Patch wrote:I think we settled Bossman was breeding a 9 months old, was that for a buck also?

this is what i was talking about!

Buddy
Ta-Da...
Hi Bill, how you do'in?
We ran the pads off Taz on the Island, Tess was in there but wasn't saying to much, she just needs more confidence and a little solo time...she was really excited about the hare...
I think Taz is going to make a good one, he can roll with the big boys. Tess ran good with my Lucy, she doesn't have the foot to drive hard so Tess got in on the checks and was able to get a few and go with them, it was really good for her and it showed... thanks for pups.
Boss is Terry's hound, I'm sure he showed good qualities, but the blood stacked behind him was worth the chance, it seems to have played out well...
HOW A HOUND PERFORMS AND HOW WELL HE MAY PRODUCE ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS...but everyone likes a good one...OK...

Hey Preacher,
Why are you hanging onto dogs that take 15months to see what you have???
Just razzing you
. I personally try and wait until they are at least a year and a half old and then only breed if I am impressed enough with both to keep one or two from the litter for myself. I hadn't heard nothing from you in a while.
By the way if you guys are talking about Plowboys Bossman, I have some out of him and even one grandpup, and I can guarantee you they won't be leaving here anytime soon.

Actually he was 2 days past being 10 mos old, when we bred him to a very old female that I had let my cousin have, that I had bred raised & trained 4 generations of ancestors. We were afraid she was going to clock out on us. There is a difference if you know & understand what is behind dogs & not just blindly throw 2 in the pen together. You also have to be smart enough to understand the personality of the indiviual, he is a laid back type hound that you can hunt with a female in heat, he is not a butt sniffer, pee on every bush, hump all the gals, type dog.
I would say it has all worked out fine, he has been an excellent rabbit dog for me, day in & day out, while producing 6 & soon to be 7 Field Champions & a boat load of outstanding rabbit dogs with a waiting list on his pups. He might turn out O.K.
As for the bucks, that first litter was split up between my cousin, me & a hunting buddy, I didn't make much of a buck on that one.. I have been thinking about an early retirement, since there is so much money to be made in these $250 beagle pups.
Preacher,
In My opinion, it is up to the indiviuals that own them to decide when they want to breed a dog & it will be proven right or wrong by the off-spring produced & not by the judgements of the keyboard cowboys.

The second season rule of thumb works pretty well for beagles. They mature faster than some breeds. Ideally a female is mentally and physically mature before needing to whelp and raise a litter. Not sure about using the theory of breeding em to give them maturity. Breeding an immature female could be setting yourself up for disaster and may or may not be the best thing for the female and pups.
Extenuating circumstances can be part of the equasion. With the technology of artificial insemination it is possible to breed dogs without actually breeding the dogs. Food for thought.

I bred my young female to an older male. I bred for what I felt that I wanted to have in my kennel. Pine Mt stock. Hard Hunt, No Fear, No Selfregard, No Quit, Speed, Endurance, I can go on and on. My gyp was only 11 months old. The sire of the litter was around 10 years; prpbably wont be around much longer. He holds some very old blood close to the front of his ped. The old blood, I wanted closer to the front of my pups also. Some how, I missed out on making any money on the litter. More than likely, by keeping a male and female and giving the rest to friends with good homes, paying for litter registration, vet bills, food, materials for my kennel, dog house, gas for delivering the dogs, rabbits for training pups. How much money did I make out of this litter? Let me see. The way my wife sees it and reminds me most frequently. I made a whopping negitive $1000.00 and climbing. Seems that everytime I fill up the food bowls that ammount gets a little larger.
Really. What I got out of the deal was two of the hardest hunting 4 month old blanket backed bluetick pups that I have ever seen. Some very happy friends and relatives. The male will more than likely be a full 15 or over. The female will most likely be around 14-15,and tight mouthed, just like her mamma. I think that I have solidified what I wanted in my kennel.
Pedigree wise, the pups are better suited for breeding than the dame.
Preacher, I was in no way offended by your post and in no way mean to offend you. I was presented with an opportunity to better my kennel and decided to take advantage of it.
