Jovan I would have to agree with Mike here. All dogs have some faultsmike crabtree wrote:I like them for the most part.
They have good hunt, and most can roll. As a line of dogs if they lack anything it would be nose, or they can be tight mouthed.
On the plus side you dont see many Patch dogs coldt trail, or be too mouthy in general.
but go for the ones that you can live with. I can't stand a dog that doesn't
hunt and that is what got me into the patch line. I have never seen a
dog that could not stand a better nose and patch are no acception.
Mike said and I agree that what they need improvement in is their nose.
Find the ones that suit you and you will have a family of hard hunting
hounds.
I have had some that would run deer and others that never ran a deer.
One that I am thinking of was the first patch I ever owned and came from
Mike Roach, Lesage Patch, would never run nothing but a rabbit. I have
had others that were so bad about running deer and handling that I
was afraid that I was going to get a electic bill from Tri - tronic because
I put so much "juice" to them. Now after me and those hounds came
to an "understanding" they turned out to be nice running hounds that
will tell on a dogs if it is running something other than a rabbit.
I live in an area where you will jump ten deer to every one rabbit
so it is tough on a hound that wants to hunt and run.
Never had one that was not smart. However I have had them that were
stuborn and independent in there behavior. I have found that the patch
are quick to learn and correct easily with the use of tri - tronic or a good
hickory stick.
HUNT and STAMINA are the formost things that you get with the patch
family. None are perfect and proper training and time afield will make
them better. This is what I have seen with the patch line.

i have 2 young hounds out of PA. the male is out of lehners buster patch and MCClurgs neli patch. he has plenty of nose. and if not care full he would be easly blowed up with his desire to be up front. hunted really hard, and would range. i had to control him with a collar. the femal is out mcclurg browning wich is a full brother to my male and a female bobs owns called Kalba. she is a little bite tight. hunts on the run, and i would say may be a bite faster then the male at 1 year old. hounds with this much desire u have to be patience.

I only had 1 run in with Patch hounds, so it may not be indicitive of a whole line and probably is not. I was running at Ceasars Creek, Ohio last year with 3 hounds, the day before they ran in a big pack hunt in Alabama.
I had been running the dogs about 3-4 hours and heard a guy running some hounds a bit away from me. He kept calling for a dog and my dogs had been on a rabbit for the better part of an hour and were moving further and further away. I went in and a hound was running behind them about 40 yards. I hooked mine up and went to the guy and told him about the hound, he was tan and white. He said thats sounds like such and such(the dog he was calling) but he has never ran behind any dog. I said well it must not have been yours then. About then old such and such comes in panting. He said is that the dog, I said sure looks like it.
He told me he wanted to see the hounds that could run in front of old such and such. I told him my dogs had run a trial the day before in ALA and had been running hard and was planning to take them in, as they were beat. He kept insisting. He had about ten to 15 mostly white dogs in the field. Just then about 50 yards away one struck. He insisted so I let my hounds go they went into the pack, took the rabbit out of the strike area circled the rabbit dang near over the guys feet and I hooked them up as his hounds were still trying to figure the line out.
After that it was all excuses and what was I feeding my dogs and how were they bred. He is a pretty big breeder in that area as I hear, but again thats the only run in I had with patch hounds. They could have been the worst of the breed. So I am not going to argue what breed is better, I just gave my honest assesment of what happened that day.
I will admit that the guy was a bit overbearing and had gotten to me or I would not have let my hounds go, as they were beat, but when they absolutely left no doubt in his mind that old such and such was nowhere near them, I was quite proud and they got an extra treat that night.

If he had 10-15 down, it couldn't have been Carlos, but, if was, and your hounds were running the front on his Hunter hound, you got some mighty fine hounds!!!
Hunter is sonic fast, letumrun brought him back cause he was going to big and took his little brother instead. Hunter don't have the patience of Jobe like Bob did but, I don't think Bob could hang with him on a drive. I'd like to have seen that pair go...
Sounds like you opened the fellers eyes on speed and drive...

Me and my dad have done pretty good with our patch hounds in trails. We have beat some of the top lines out and we have also been smoked by them same lines. We have had guys tell us that we have some of the best running patch hounds that they have ran with. I have ran with hounds out of other lines that I thought were better than my dog that day. I like Patchhounds and will always run Patchhounds.
I am quite sure the guy remembers this day. I had my dog Dutch(World Champ Big Pack won Speed and Drive category in 2 different World Hunts) Blaze who won a hunt in SC and Jesse who has come in second in a couple of Big Pack Hunts that Dutch won.
Nothing against Patch hounds as a whole just one experience as I said. The rest may be fantastic.

I think it all boils down to personal likes and dislikes. I may just be easier to please than most, but I personally like my patch dogs drive, determination and overall hunt. I've hunted and owned several beagles, grade and registered, and so far the Patch dogs are what has pleased me the most. I can recall very few gun trips out that I couldn't have filled my bag limit if my shooting was up to par
, so I guess in a nutshell "To each his own, and feed and hunt what you like".

Feed and hunt what you like!
