Actualy I look for the way the hound runs the track, and how the hound hunts. Brains is a hard thing to see in a hound if you only watch it run once or twice,if the hound wasn't given the right amount of solo time they can look stupid and have all the brains in the world, they still have to learn to run a rabbit.

HUNT HUNT AND MORE HUNT I DON'T THINK YOU CAN HAVE ENOUGH I THINK THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE JUST WANTING A DOG TO BE A FRONT RUNNER NOT GIVING THE HARDEST HUNTING DOGS ENOUGH CREDIT

I hunt mostly hare and run all winter in tough conditions. Track running ability is by far the most important thing to me. Never had any problem getting one jumped but seen plenty of times where they couldn't run it.

I want a hound that keeps the rabbit going, the faster the better without making many losses. Slow dogs that run out of scent and over competitive, over running dogs won't last here no matter how much hunt they have. If they can't hang on to the track they can't stay.

The first thing we see when looking at a hound is color/confirmation of course .

I voted for HUNT :!: Mustv'e been the right answer too  .

Important list :

Hunt
Tracking ability
Foot speed
Mouth use
Size
Confirmation / color ( although at the bottom of my list , if I don't like it's looks , I doubt I'd be interested enough to put the time into it ) ;)

Desire- to hunt
Brains- to use the tools and information gathered to best advantage.
Determination- to never quit
Courage- to go on when all seems hopeless
Levelheadedness- to use all the above sensibily and never become rattled by pressure or doubt...
If a hound exhibits these inbred gifts, he has the best chance of make a top hound... ;)
I have to vote for a balance and good dose of all.
