Was I wrong

Post by Jack »

I have almost a mile of Yakima River frontage. I have always left the land wide open to others. The rules were DON"T SHOOT MY RABBITS and NO TRASH left behind. Very good small mouth bass fishing and the catfishing was good too. As good as ducking as there is most of the time. Quail hunting -fair. People come and went as they pleased. I let my Beagle pups run loose and never have had trouble, until some one stole one and it was the one I wanted most. Now I have posted this place and no one is allowed to do any thing. The way I feel right now I will not let the BOY Scouts camp out. Do you think I am wrong for letting one bad apple ruin the barrel? I kinda feel like a jerk.

No I don't think you are wrong, but if you want to leave it open to others yet have some control then just post it and put a sign up that says permission may be requested from the owner. That way anyone that accesses without your knowledge can be prosecuted, yet others can go, but must have your permission that way you know who is on the land. I spend a lot of time cleaning up after other knuckleheads on some of my running grounds because I don't wan the land owner to take the priviledges away. Some people just have no home training and will dump stuff and leave their trash and no land owner wants to clean up after others, not even me.

I agree with bigdog by permission only is a good way to go. I know on my property thats what I do. I feel bad about closeing it of to every body because of a few a-holes when I run on other peoples property. Dumping garbage has got to be a problem up here, they charge to take tires and applinences to the dump so people throw them out on back roads and fields. My granchildren and I are always cleaning some roadside.

Put your number on the posted sign and say no hunting without premission...

Sounds like white trash isn't just a southern thing anymore!

Some folks just don't care. You probably know the good folks that use it and letting them on with a permit is a good idea. It's your land, do as you please and they should respect that.

If you go with the sign and phone number, you might want to put something on the sign about "No Calls After a certain time". A friend of mine has his land posted with his phone number and you would be amazed at how late some of these people call. Then again, seeing as they took one of your pups, there probably isn't much that would amaze you at this point.

jack,

how do you know the pup was stolen.

Did it come up missing or did you see it happen? I only ask beacuse we were sure on time that a guy we know stole one of our hounds that was running one night at the house. I was sure enough to confront him about it. Boy did i feel stupid when i found the dogs reamins weeks later apparently of a coyote attack and had to go apologize to the fella.

You sound like one of the rare individuals who cares to let folks enjoy your land and i applaud you for that. All i am saying is before you lock out some people who really appreciate what you are doing make sure you have the right reason.

Lots of trash I am dead certain of. I think the Blue pup was taken because, my wife was working the garden- I was running dogs - she saw both pups gp to the river . One come running back to her acting like it was scare. She saw the top of a Van leave below the house. Jack

IT'S YOUR PROPERTY & YOUR DECISON, I THINK THE HUNT WITH PERMISSION IDEA IS THE RIGHT WAY TO GO. THE GUY WHO TOOK YOUR PUP ISN'T COMMING BACK ANYWAY. SURE SORRY THOUGH.
