Snakebite

Post by DarkCornerKennel »

Late this afternoon my dogs were excited and barking in the kennel. I went to check on them and found a copperhead in a run with two dogs. I saw fang marks on the noses of both dogs. One dog has two sets of marks and he's swelling and sick. The other dog has the marks but he's not sick or swelling. The vet had already closed so I gave him some benedryl. I'm hoping he doesn't get any worse. It's been about 5 hours since it happened. Any home remedies for snakebite?

Give him a childs dose of Benadryl every 8 hours for 2 days.

Benadryl-1 tablet or 2 cc of liquid
1 cc penecillen
1 brown paper grocery bag
kerosene
give medicine daily for 2 days

Cut at least a 4 x 4 square of the bag and soak in the kerosene, once soaked hold soaked paper over fang marks for minimum of 5 min for 2 days this will draw poison and any infection out.

Thanks for the replies. The swelling had gone down some this morning and he was feeling better. This afternoon I was surprised at his improvement. He ate as normal, was frisky and the swelling is almost gone. Thanks again.

Found a DEAD Copperhead in one of my pens today! I have a single 3 year old Branko female in that pen. At first I was not sure the snake was dead so I called her out. She had a little blood on her but seemed fine. I could not find any wounds and have concluded that what I saw was the snake's blood. Best I could tell she put the death grip on him just below his head!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sure glad he did not bite any of my beagle, or even worse, me or one of my sons. I sure will be more careful down there - especially at night! Glad your dogs are doing okay!

Chuck, if you have a collar on her, take it off just in case. If she was bit in the face/neck area, the collar can cut off air circulation if she swells much.
