Stud fees

Stud fees
What is an appropriate fee? I have a 4 year old male strictly hunting, no trial. He is a fantastic hound and great family dog. I have a breeder interested in crossing him with one of his females. I am not interested in a pup, what should I ask for in terms of a stud fee?
Most males w/ champion titles to their names stud for $200. I'd say $100 would be fair, make sure you get a NEGATIVE Brucellosis test 1st - hope this helps.

Here is the deal that I frequently hear. A pick of the litter (but you said that you weren't interested in that) or the price they get for a pup. So, if they charge $300 for a pup, then your stud fee should be $300. If they balk at that, then take a pup and turn around and sell it yourself. Seems only fair!

So, if a guy has a INT FC stud dog and he charges $350.00 for the breeding and the guy with the pups is selling them for $250 each and the owner of the male takes his pick of the litter does the owner of the litter still owe him $100.00? I agree with the previous statement the price of a pup should be the same as the stud fee.. There are now dogs out there that guys are paying $400.00 for a stud.... good luck gettting $400.00 for a pup.
Find out what the selling price is going to be on the pups and then charge that much.

I agree with you Buschbound, I thought about that after I posted. If you have an IFC and you determine your stud fee to be whatever... before the transaction takes place, you (the owner of the stud) and the owner of the female will agree on whatever works out between the two of you.
Clear as mud? LOL!

i think $200.00 is very reasonable for a pup or stud fee,but it kind of depends on what dog you are talking about.
personally i would not pay more than that or charge more then that, but just the other day i was told that two pups sold for a WHOLE lot more than that out of reggie and awful bawlin hossier, but that goes back to what i said, look at what they are out of,my god, look what she has reproduced!!!!
i will never say what they sold for cause it is the breeders personal info, but,i would have paid it,no dought about it!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the stud fee should be what you and the other party agree upon, however, it should also be based upon price of pup.
If you are breeding responsibly this would also deter unwanted pups and over abundance of pups. This would make the Dam owner think twice about what they are doing. Besides if you are breeding to a dam that has no background and your stud has background what are they selling when they sell the pups... Well look at the ads, Turbo Bred Pups or This Bred pups. Well Turbo isn't the daddy so how far back are ya lookin to find that Turbo.
What if all the pups out of the bitch turned out to be junk, who is gonna get the bad publicity the stud owner. No one ever looks to the bitch for pups that dont work out. So if I was the stud owner I would at the minimum charge pup price, besides what if the dam owner brought some kind of coodie into your kennel and you charged 100 for stud fee and guess what it cost you a lot more then 100 for clearing up the coodies. There is a lot that goes into breeding it isn't just let ol fido have some fun. What happens if it is an aggresive breeder and she tears up your male? Or ruins him for good on breeding there goes your chance of having a pup out of him out of a planned breeding of your own.
So pup price to me isn't to awfully high when you take into account what all you might encounter after the fact. Along with the dam owner uses your pedigree and your dogs success to sell their pups at a premium price.

It's a person's perogative to ask what they want for a stud fee and furthermore pay it. However $300 to a non-champion moreso non-productive stud is rather high in my opinion. Most folks don't get $300 for a pup from backyard breeding either. Before someone jumps me, no I'm not saying a champion is worth that either. Because fact is a title in front of their name doesn't mean they're going to produce any better than Shep on the porch will. It's what's between their head and legs opposed to what's in the trophy case.
My opinion is about as worthless as a fart in the wind, but I always figured $100 was fair price for non-championed hound. $150 to $200 for championed dog depending on what they've produced. $200 to $300 for IFC or Grand Champion. Once again depending on what they've produce.
If a dog can't produce like he or she, then all the accolades they have in the world mean's jack squat.
Best of luck to the original poster. Hope your cross works out the best for you guy.

With our AKC showdogs stud fees usually run:
* $300 for a non proven dog (no pups on the ground to go by)
* $300 for an unfinished dog (no AKC CH even though he might be on the way to earning one).
*$400 for your average "run of the mill" CH dog producing pretty, finishable pets and the occasional head turner.
*$500 for a extra nice CH dog that produces consistantly
* $500 to $1000.00 for a top stud dog in high demand that consistantly produces really nice puppies that consistantly mature into way above average adults.
I also think you guys should charge a little more depending on how much work you put into getting the bitch bred. Show dog breeders will go a hundred extra miles to make sure that bitch is bred. We will collect dogs and inseminate bitches, and device all kinds of ramps or what have you to make sure that short boy can get his girl, or vice versa. It can be a LOT of work and if someone just shipped you a bitch that cost them $200.00 each way ON TOP of a stud fee you are going to bend over backwards to get that bitch bred. So we charge for it.
I will also admit that SOME show bitches seem to have a well earned reputation for being prissy little house pet girls that like to scoot at the last second. Of the 5 bitches I have tried to bred they have been about half and half (scooters or sluts)
