Are there many SPO style bloodlines that are throwing a lot of blueticks?

FoxBeagle,
I have ran with oakhill a few times and she is a good friend of mine her hounds are more of a arha progressive pack or little pack instead of an spo hound. She has some great hounds thats for sure!! And she is a real stand up lady as well its hard to find someone thats as nice as she is. I'm proud to call her my friend!!!

I think there are some very good Turbo bred hounds that would do well in some of the SPO formats.I have a double Turbo, double Ace In The Hole bred ten month old male pup that I think will do very well in SPO he is medium to medium fast speed but he has excellant control.Look at KY Reggie, now an IFC he has pretty much done it all in the AKC SPO Midwest as well as the ARHA Little pack formats.Vic
Uplander,
I agree with you 100 percent, there are some great tubo pups out there and Reggie is a awesome hound and he done it all what an accompishment!!!!
The only thing i have seen is there is a difference in the spo dogs from down here to up north. U can take a Spo hound from the north and run little pack and progessive pack arha, but down here a spo hound couldn't keep up with the little pack. And please don't get me wrong i am not knockin spo hounds they are some great hounds but different people like different things and i respect what ever anyone likes for they are the ones feeding them. I just feel there is a difference from southern spo and northern spo hounds but that is just my opinion. But good luck to everyone no matter what type formate u run a good hound is a good hound!!

I have heard about the speed of the southern hounds, but I can also tell you that what you speak of is a problem for us here in the north and in my home state of Ohio.In the extreme SW corner you have the Midwest SPO formats that are run Primarily in Kentucky,SW Ohio,Indiana,Michigan,& Illinios. The SPO type hounds that compete in this Midwest format are probably on par with your southern hounds with speed. Now in NE Ohio where I live the SPO hounds are the UBGF, or the PBGF type which are more conservative medium speed hounds, that for the most part would not do well in the Midwest compitition. This is why so many of us in this area run in the UKC hunting beagle format or the ARHA little pack format.I personally know of two instances where beagling friends of mine have had to pick up their very good dogs that I know personally while competing in a AKC SPO trial for what they were told running too much rabbit. What it boiled down to I was told by them that their dogs were doing it all and the other dogs were not getting to really contribute to the cast at all.So do you see what I mean?If I lived about two to three hours SW of where I do I could Use my good fast hounds to do it all in AKC Midwest,UKC,andARHA,but as it is I have to have a couple of medium speed hounds for the AKC SPO or Gundog Brace trials around me in NE Ohio.Vic

Uplander,
i see what u are saying also seems like u running into the same thing i am. I run arha little pack and progessive pack because my hounds are too strong for the spo down here. If i put mine down they would get picked up in about 2 min.
so i have to travel a ways to run little pack but we have a lot of the progessive pack hunts here in Georgia. I have never ran the ukc circuit how is it. I have heard some good things about it though.

UKC
Sorry it took me so long to reply but I lost a very special hound Sat.may 12 she was hit by a car.I can tell you that the UKC hunting beagle format is sound because each cast member has to call his or her own dog.No format is perfect and the judge assigned to the cast can overide any decision in which case the aggrieved party can appeal to the master of hounds and then what the master of hounds rules is final. There is a certain amount of intimidation from some of the experienced houndsmen who have been running UKC many years and you must be quick to know and call your dog.Sometimes the hound can be a victim of the handler.UKC also has a newer format called the performance pack which is judged like the ARHA progressive pack by independant judges and is for a more conservative speed hound. In the hunting beagle format the little pack style of hound seems to do well up here in the north.Hope this helps-----Vic
