Fleas & Ticks on rabbits

What do you guys use to keep your rabbits in the training pens from becoming infested with fleas & ticks? It is a big problem here. I've heard of making dusting stations & adding sevin dust. I have also heard of using pyrethrin based powders in dusting stations. Have any of you tried this and what do you think about it?

Most cottontails I have ever shot have had fleas, however, I have never found a tick on them. I have heard that if you keep guinea fowl (spelling), they eat the ticks and other bugs... Maybe chickens would do the trick too, I don't know.

guina fowl do a number on ticks they are great for that and I have seen them scare coon away even

worst.. put a downed rabbit quickly into game bag on a warm day...man they eat you alive...lol

I have a dusting sand bed with seven dust in it. I noticed that last year the wild rabbits had very few critters on them but the redbacks would be covered in critters. I have seen the rabbits already dusting in my sand bed.Dont know of anything else,wonder if you could put a cattle tag in the rabbits ear when you turn them loose,they would get you through the summer months.I have friends who put cattle tags on their dogs.

A few years back I ask the county's ag. agent for info on spraying twelve acres for ticks. He sent me a letter suggesting the chemical and quantity to use per acre. It was going to cost thousands of dollars.

A dusting area is a small area w/ dust basically that you can add Sevin or any other flea/tick remedy to and it gets on the animals when they come there. A guinea fowl is like a small peacock and they do a # on ticks and insects.

Dusting station is very interesting, how is this built is it like a sand box? Or just a patch of sand and dirt with bug stuff mixed in it?

I hear they are great at getting rid of all types of bugs, chickens are pretty good at it too, however guinea hens are kind of neat birds..

I am not sure if this works or not. I put salt every where I run the dogs 2 times a year. I use salt blocks that have sulfur in them. I bust them up in small hunks . I was told this helps keep critters that suck blood off of cattle. The rabbits that are killed during season have no bugs on them.

I have a puppy starting pen that has worked out real well, i do have some trouble with fleas and ticks, use 7 dust and cat litter,us one of those cheap storage boxes, cut a hole on each end but in your mixture but on the lid and the rabbits will do the rest.

We used to have Guineas around the horse farms. They cut down on the worm and fly population too. Drawback or Plus depending on how you look at it, they are great watchdogs. Will make noise at anything that moves. I found them 100 times more annoying then a pack of neighbors dogs...... Also depending on your area, they are considered livestock, just like chickens so check your regulations.
