Modean was the dog that got us started in field trialing. I remember her first trial, she just stood at our feet, lol. She didn't want no part of them other dogs. That was up at Broad River Beagle Club where we met Daddy Rabbit and his Son Snake.
Over the next couple of trials Modean warmed up to the idea she was there to run a rabbit. She had a bit more foot than the average open class dog and it was hard to get scores on her as the judges couldn't keep up in the thick stuff and couldn't score what they couldn't see.
Eventually she got her 1st place win and went on to certify as a Rabbit Champion.
The Champion Class was where she really shined. She got wins from Georgia to Michigan. Modean had ruptured her disk in 2000 and had to stop the competition where at the time she was 1st place for high points. She still managed to finish 9th place for high points after only running 8 months out of that year. Other dogs were able to catch and pass her but she still had 9th place in high points which qualified her for the Hound of the Year run off. She won the Hound of the year Run off in Indiana where she competed against the other 9 high points hounds at 8 years old.
She competed a few more times as a Grand Champion and the last trial she ran in, she lost to a hound she had beat several times before. It was time for retirement and hunting. All in all she had 23 first place wins from open to Grand Champion in her trialing career. She wasn't a super dog, she just had heart!
Modean was a fantastic mother and produced several Rabbit Champions and above average hounds that were competitive in both ARHA PP and AKC SPO. Her litter average size was 10 and she never lost a pup. The best mother we had ever owned.
Although we miss her greatly, she is still here with us in memory and in her Pups, Grand pups and Great Gand pups.
